Elizabeth turned the old woman’s chair so she didn’t see what was about to happen.

This was about to get ugly.

“Well, fuck you, Artemis. This is my town, and you’re done here.”

And the fight began.

Artemis moved at her again, and Maura was not even close to being gentle.

Artemis was outmatched, and each time she got a blow in, it was twice as bad when Maura returned it.

She broke her nose.

Her cheekbone.

Her right arm, and then her left.

When she was on her knees, with the Marine above her, Maura leaned down to whisper into her ear.

“You called out the dogs. Only, I’m the biggest bitch in the whole fucking yard.”

Then, she elbowed her in the face so hard, the woman’s head snapped back.

And she went out.

All around her, the family who ignored her orders to stay put but instead came inside to back her up, clapped. Maura didn’t have a scratch on her, and the woman on the ground…

She was a mess.

Jagger handed her guns back, as Elizabeth shook her head.

“You’re mean in a fight,” she said.

She snorted.

“I’m a Marine. We’re made to be mean. It’s all those drill sergeants screaming in our faces for twelve weeks straight. It makes you a cunt.”

Heading Artemis’ way, Elizabeth snapped cuffs on her.

“Where is she going now?” Zayn asked. “We can’t let her live.”

She was aware.

Elizabeth was honest.

“To Chartres.”

Zayn stared at her.

“Why you gotta invite the whole goddamn city to our office? It’s not a community center, Elizabeth! It’s hard to get that funk out afterward!”

She laughed.

How could she not?

Zayn…

He was funny.
