Not.

At.

All.

“Are we screwed?” he asked.

“No more than usual,” Maura reassured. “Worse comes to worst, we head to the bunker in the swamp. No one knows about that. Just Elizabeth and Axelle. Let’s just say that I’d be careful,” she said, looking at Jinx. “We will be too.”

They had one thing going in their favor too.

“The Russians aren’t here yet, are they?” Merry asked.

Remington shook his head.

“Not yet. Soon. Calyx said by the end of the week. They are trying to get this city, and maybe it’s for revenge.”

“Of course, they are,” Maura said.

Only, before she could say anything else, Jagger actually stood, and he was focused on something outside the window.

“I saw something move out in the courtyard,” he admitted, warning the family.

That was all Zayn had to hear.

He was paranoid on a good day.

“Oh, well, shit. That’s bad if someone is out there in the courtyard,” he admitted, pushing his wife behind him almost automatically.

Well, that did what it needed to do.

If you wanted to clear a room of Hunters, you just mentioned a creeper to a bunch of trigger-happy nuts. Maybe it was Violet, walking around, and if it was, she’d be safe.

Only, they couldn’t take any chances.

Immediately, the room cleared out, everyone going for their guns minus Stella who just sat there. She was pregnant and knew Zayn would shoot her if she tried. Merry was also left behind.

She’d tried to bring up one thing, but they weren’t listening to her.

As usual.

This screamed one suspect.

As they moved out, single filing it out the door, they spread out like a platoon and began clearing the courtyard. The men went one way, and the Snakes went the other with Maura in the lead.

Only, no one was there.

Not.

A.

Soul.

“Are you sure?” Zayn whispered. “Really? You saw someone?”

Jagger wasn’t playing. He knew he saw someone, and while it wasn’t a shadow…

“Yeah, tall, dark hair, and…”
