The system freaked him out even more.

“And MATE needs you.”

Zayn stood by his wife and stared at the computer like it was the enemy.

Elizabeth got them to focus.

“Hey! Over here, Hunters. Ignore the paranoid man hiding behind the little blonde.”

Stella laughed.

When Ivan came into the room, he stayed in the corner, keeping his distance so Elizabeth could work.

“Who is it?” Jagger asked, meaning the man who was a hologram in front of them.

She shared.

“That’s William Deveraux,” she said. “He’s one of the victims.”

From where he stood, as he was stewing in his own juices over Gene walking out the door with his ex, he clued them in.

He was trying to be a cop over a wounded lover.

“I know him,” Tommy admitted. “I’ve met him a few times. He’s a wealthy lawyer who used to be the DA in the city. Now, he’s a high-priced attorney who takes on rich clientele. When I was the homicide captain, a few of my detectives went head-to-head with him.”

She was glad someone was familiar because they had to piece this together as quickly as possible.

The Russians were coming.

“This is Shasta Deveraux,” she added, pulling up another hologram as they stood side by side.

Elizabeth waved her arm, and they changed.

“This is them now.”

They.

Were.

Dead.

It was clear to all of them that the two people hadn’t died easily. As a group who had used torture to make the bad guys bleed, quite literally, it was evident that was what had happened.

“The father was tortured, and the daughter was raped. She was in from college, and someone destroyed them.”

Yeah, clearly.

She kept going.

“This is Jonathan Denmark,” she said as a new man appeared, and with him a woman. “This is his wife, his much younger wife, Bambi.”

“Like the deer?” Boone asked.

“Yeah, and she’s definitely not old enough to remember the movie,” she stated. “He was the police commissioner for the city.”

Uh-oh.

It seemed like there was a theme here.
