W hen they left the safety of Chartres Street, the two men immediately picked up two Marine bodyguards. There was no freaking way Elizabeth was going to let Ethan wander the streets of New Orleans with a Hunter and no backup.
Instead of trying to sneak away, or fight it, he just embraced that protection duty.
He didn’t mind since Raphael and Saint were family, and they wouldn’t gossip about anything they saw or heard.
So when they began walking toward the square, and he saw the blacked-out ride creeping after them down the street, he relaxed.
Since that was covered, maybe it was time for Ethan to handle the other issue at hand.
Gene and his anxiety.
At a coffee stand, he bought his ex a coffee, just the way he liked it.
Then, he grabbed them a bag of beignets and directed him to a bench not far away that overlooked the water.
It was time to play therapist with his once-lover.
“Spill it,” Ethan said, holding the bag of beignets he’d gotten for them. “I know you’re a hot mess, and I’m here so use me to get it off of your chest.”
Gene couldn’t even express how much he needed to be near Ethan at that moment.
He was struggling.
While Gene was a stoic kind of guy, who would keep it buried deep, with Ethan, the man he’d loved for so many years, he couldn’t pretend.
He could read him.
Ethan knew everything about him from how he liked his coffee, which side of the bed he favored, his sexual preference, and even that he was a morning person.
Gene took a beignet from the bag and took a bite. Then, he put his trust in the man beside him.
There was no one he trusted more in his whole life. Ethan Blackhawk was his rock.
“I need a huge favor from you.”
Ethan was all ears.
“What do you need?” he asked. “If I can get it for you, Gene, you know all you have to do is make that request. I’d do anything for you. You’re part of me and our family.”
He was aware.
Truth be told, he missed this man.
