Ethan had been the easiest man to love. Beneath the prickles there had been a compassion and kindness he’d never seen again.

He missed him.

He missed them.

With Preston, he was happy because he could be himself. There were more times that Preston took him in hot sexual need, and he could be a bottom.

With Tommy…

He had to be the top. He had to be someone he wasn’t, and that was fraying at the seams.

God.

He missed sex with Ethan and Preston.

“Am I old?” he asked, glancing over at still the most handsome man he’d ever seen in his whole life.

A lot had changed.

Long ago, he wore his hair pulled back, but now, it was loose and hung to his shoulders like that gorgeous black silk.

Gene looked over.

“Am I?”

Ethan reassured him.

“Well, you’re older than me, but only a little over a year. That’s hardly crypt keeper going on there. You’re still handsome, and I’m gonna bet you can still get it up.”

He laughed.

“Not the direction I was taking, but yeah, I can still get it up. I’ll even go as far as to admit that you seem to still make it difficult to be around and not think about sex.”

Ethan winked at him.

“I do have my skills, Gene.”

Oh, that was for damn sure.

He took a bite of his beignet and sipped his coffee as he tried to find a way to ask the largest favor of his life. This wasn’t easy for him.

“Just say it,” Ethan suggested. “I meant what I said. If you need something, I’ll make it happen. You’re mine to protect, and you always will be.”

God.

He appreciated that more than the man would ever know. At that moment, he was struggling.

Gene put his faith in the man beside him and went for it.

“I want to come back to the FBI. I know that the only way that’s happening, at fifty, is if you have Elizabeth pull strings. I’m not sure she’ll do it for me. I know she’ll do it for you. I’m going to rely on our relationship to job hop.”

Ethan was surprised.

“Why wouldn’t she do it on her own?”

Oh, he wasn’t shocked about him coming back to the FBI. Honestly, Ethan suspected that was going to happen. He knew that he and Tommy…it was going to be problematic.

You had to be blind not to see it.
