Chapter 23

“Thanks a lot for bringingthem out and thanks for the hay contact.” Davis shook the hand of the man who had delivered the horses.

They’d come off the trailer without a problem, which suited Davis just fine. Even the little Arabian mare that could barely stand had been just as sweet as could be.

He would have thought, after the abuse that she’d obviously been through, that she’d be scared and upset, possibly biting and kicking in defense, but she wasn’t.

He wished Kim could be there to see the horses’ heads hanging out over the edges of their stalls and smell the way the stable smelled, which was different than when it was empty.

“No problem. Go ahead and just tell him I sent you. If he’s got hay to sell, he’ll be happy to hear from you.”

“And I’ll be happy to get in touch with him.” Davis nodded at the man, who lifted a hand, then turned and strode toward his pickup.

They had some hay in the barn, but Davis would really like to have it down at the stable, where it would be easier to feed. Especially during this time where he would be trying to spend as much time at the NICU with Kathleen and Kim as he could.

While he was thinking about it, he figured he would dial the number and talk to the man about hay.

He strode through the stable as the phone rang in his ear, looking at the horses, petting wide foreheads, and smiling at the thought of what Kim would do when she saw them. She was going to be so happy. It felt like her business really was getting started.

“Hello.”

“Hello. I was told that you had horse hay for sale.”

He wanted to explain where he lived, but he wasn’t sure how to describe his relationship with Kim. He wanted to be able to say my wife and I, but even though she technically agreed that they might pursue the idea of a relationship, he was far from being married to her.

“You called the right guy, because I’ve got a bunch, and I’m getting ready to make more. I’d love to sell some.”

They talked about price and deliveries, and the man agreed to be there the next afternoon. Davis assured him that he would help unload.

It had been years since he’d thrown hay bales around, but he had to admit he was kind of looking forward to it. If Kim were out of the hospital, along with Kathleen, he’d almost say he would be perfectly happy.

He felt almost completely content as he scratched the head of the skinny mare. He wanted to think of a name for all of the horses, but he wouldn’t name them without Kim. So, he took pictures and sent them to her.

She was focused on Kathleen, and he understood that, but he thought this might get her mind off of the what ifs and all of the other medical jargon that they seemed to get into every day.

Still, Kim had seemed totally calm and at peace ever since they talked, and it was something that he thanked God for on a daily basis, that she wasn’t scared and crying. That had been one of the worst times of his life. Feeling helpless to do anything to help her feel better.
