Adrianna shrugged, the movement yanking the brush a bit harder than necessary. Sienna held back a yelp and pursed her lips in a thin line, hoping her friend wouldn’t notice. She had nothing to worry about because Adrianna was too angry to see anything else than red.

“They’re treating him as an honorary member of the family, as if he were their older brother. He trained them to fight and taught them the strategies of battle,” Adrianna said, sounding resentful that Brian had a higher position in the family than she ever would.

Sienna turned around in her seat, the sudden change of her position forced Adrianna to look at her. She stood up and rested her hands on her friend’s shoulders, then looked her straight in the eye.

“At the moment, I don’t have much to offer you, and I know that you’re a part of the Carrington clan, but I want you to know that I consider you a part of my family. I promise you that with me, you’ll always have a place at the table, whether it’s as a part of the Ryder clan or a Lockwood one. I don’t know yet how things will work out, but I just wanted you to know that.”

Adrianna blinked rapidly a few times to prevent her tears from falling. She threw her hands around Sienna’s neck, pulling her into a crushing hug.

“Thank you,” she said, her voice breaking. “I’ve never had a real family, and to hear you say that… you’ve no idea how much that means to me. Thank you.”

Sienna returned the embrace, remembering how Adrianna told her how her parents died in a car accident when she was a little kid, and she didn’t have many memories of them. Mr. Carrington took her into his household, letting the servants raise her. In her spare time, she ran around with the Carrington heirs while at the same time always being reminded where her spot was.

“We should get ready soon,” Adrianna said at last, breaking the fragile spell. “They’ll be waiting for you, but you do have a few minutes to eat your breakfast.”

Sienna shook her head, eyeing it wearily. “I think I’ll eat something on the plane. It’s too early for me to properly enjoy it.”

“Let’s get going then.”

Adrianna opened the door for Sienna, then jumped back, startled at seeing Jensen there.

“Jensen,” Sienna breathed at the same time Adrianna shrieked.

Jensen gave Adrianna an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry for scaring you. I was just about to knock.”

“It’s okay. I’m too young to have a heart attack,” Adrianna said, holding one hand on her chest to still her racing heart. “I’ll go see if Brian loaded up all the bags.”

Sienna and Jensen watched Adrianna walk down the hallway until she turned a corner and disappeared. Jensen turned to Sienna, giving her an appraising look.

“You look a lot better than yesterday,” he told her.

Sienna’s brows furrowed. “Was that supposed to be a compliment?”

“I only meant that you look rested. I didn’t mean anything by it.”

“Oh yeah? Then can you tell me why you were acting like you had a stick stuck up your ass yesterday at the meeting? Aiden and I did a good job, and you kept on putting us down,” Sienna argued, unable to keep her temper in check.

“I was only expressing my opinion,” Jensen said matter-of-factly, his voice neutral and unbothered. “The purpose of war meetings isn’t to soothe your feelings and keep you happy, but to explore every angle and decision our enemies might take.”

Sienna’s eyes burned, and she took a step forward, so she was standing face to face with Jensen. She refused to acknowledge how intoxicating and fresh his scent of a liberating freedom of the vastness of the sea was. She refused to think about all the fun times at the beach and yacht parties she associated it with. When she looked into his dark blue eyes, she pretended they were so dark that they were black instead of blue. It was the only way to see him as the devil and not one of the most handsome men she’d ever seen, with a perfect eight-pack on a body that filled every inch of his suit, and hair as dark as the darkest of nights where a person would be up to no good. That was what she wanted to do with him, things that wouldn’t be good to anyone, much less them.

“You’re a two-faced asshole,” she hissed, her temper growing at the lack of his reaction. “You think so highly of yourself, but in reality, no one wants to be around your pompous ass. I bet that you don’t like your own company either. You’re boring, full of secrets, and too damn demanding. You should ease up and have a good fuck. I’m sure if you pay someone good enough, they’ll be willing to ignore your shitty attitude.”

The only hint that Jensen heard her was the narrowing of his eyes. He tilted his head down, less than an inch of space between their foreheads, his air trickling with hers. Sienna’s breath caught in her chest as he wetted his lips, and hers parted in response.

“This is the last time you’ll talk to me that way without getting punished,” he warned with a low voice that sent shivers down her spine for all the wrong reasons that had nothing to do with being scared. “You don’t want me to teach you respect, but I will if I have to. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

He pronounced the last words clearly and slowly, making them sound scarier. Sienna gulped, but not because she was afraid; because of the closeness and the self-restraint she had to show not to jump him. Those lips of his that she yearned to taste, his tongue that promised to be the perfect dancing partner, and his eight-pack that she wanted to touch again, trailing her hand lower until she found the stick she wanted to rub.

Sienna shifted ever so slightly, feeling the wetness soaking through her panties, dripping on her thigh. Her heart skipped a beat at the thought of Jensen licking it up, until he reached her most sensitive area. She cursed herself for wanting him to eat her. He was an asshole, but in that moment, she desired him.

Jensen took a step back, breaking Sienna out of her reverie. The heat on her cheeks made her suspect her face was more flushed than she would’ve liked. Jensen’s smug little smile told her he knew everything that was on her mind.

“You should go,” he told her with a formal but softer tone than the threatening one he used before. “Stay safe and don’t make any stupid promises.”

Sienna’s temper flared again as she narrowed her eyes at him. “Go fuck yourself,” she told him and walked down the hallway without looking back to see if he followed.

She wondered how it was possible for him to change his personalities so often. The last time they said goodbye, he was more caring and kinder, while this time he was an even bigger asshole than during the time he hated her.
