His shop wasn’t far from where we were, so we strolled two blocks chatting before reaching the door. I saw him through the glass, waving his arms around at someone. I laughed to myself before holding the door for Jenna.

Fabian was high-strung, but one of the greatest people I knew. He always spoke his mind, so I was interested to know what he’d say when I dropped the bomb on him. He’d always loved my hair the way it was. Our security posted themselves just inside the door. Fabian froze when he saw me. His mouth fell agape.

“Chance Hardwin!” He clasped his hands over his mouth, concealing a wide grin.

“Hey, Fab.”

He turned to Jenna. “How have you been, darling?”

Jenna giggled. “I’ve been okay. How are you?” She didn’t want him to know we’d been struggling with some things.

“Never better, love. Come, come.” He shooed us both toward the chairs in the back. “You sit here.” He pointed to the chair next to his station.

Jenna sat, slowly spinning in the chair, as she did any time she was in one that rotated.

“What are we doing to you today?” He faced me toward the mirror, snapping a black cape on me.

“I want my hair as close to its natural color as you can get it.”

His face dropped before he spun me around, stopping the chair with his foot. “Why in the hot flames of hell would you want to do that?!”

“Because I want to go back to my natural color.”

After he picked his jaw up off the floor, he pivoted dramatically to Jenna. “Best friend, did you tell him to do it?”

She guffawed, shaking her head. “Nope, that’s all him.”

“Lord help me.” He twisted me back toward the mirror, making a cross over his chest. “I’ll do it because you’ll look hot either way, but I don’t want to, and you better not tell anyone I condoned this. Your fans will crucify me.”

A couple of hours later, he whirled me around a final time to the mirror, removing the cape and shaking the extra hair onto the floor. Standing, I studied my reflection, tilting my head several ways. He had also trimmed my hair. It was still longer on top than it was on the side, but now I was staring at shorter sides, and it was dark chocolate.

“It actually looks amazing.” Jenna complimented me. “God, it’s hot, Chance. Not gonna lie.”

Fabian sighed. “I like it, I like it, but I have to get used to it. What do you think?”

“I’ll definitely go back to blonde eventually, but I’m feeling this look a lot right now. My scalp might enjoy the break.”

I followed him to the register, paying before we stepped outside. Jenna glanced around. I peeked at my watch.

“What now, stranger?” She stretched her hand up to my head, ruffling my dark feathery locks.

“Head back to your place? Hang out? Call Amber over?” I suggested.

“That sounds fun. You guys should stay for dinner tonight.”

“We’d love to. I’ll call her real fast.”

As we walked toward the parking garage, I slipped my phone into my palm, calling Amber.

Hey, how’s it going?

Great, baby. Would you like to meet us at their house? We’re on our way now. Dinner and games?

Can she hear you?

Yeah.
