“Wow,” I whispered, “That was an award-winning performance.”“You live, you learn,” Nico murmured. “Keeps the cops off my ass. I can fake anything.”

“Is she going to be okay?” Chance handed Nico the shirt he’d taken off. “I thought you might need this.”

Nico took it, slipping it over his head, concealing his chiseled, flawless frame. “Thanks.”

“Are you by possibility, Mr. Pallas?”

Nico spun on his heels toward the reception desk. “Yes?”

The officer, who was on the phone, summoned him over with the wave of his hand. Chance wrapped his arm around me, holding me against his side. He was quieter than normal, which was understandable.

“Do you think they know?” I said barely loud enough for Chance to hear me.

He pressed his lips to the top of my head. “It’ll be handled by them. Don’t worry.”

Anxious, I nodded.

“You ready?” Nico asked as he approached again. “They’re taking us to a private waiting area.” He motioned for me to walk ahead. “It’s okay.”

Nodding, I crossed the waiting room, thankful the only other people in the area were a couple of randoms on the other side. The automatic doors opened and the three of us were greeted by a welcoming nurse.

“Good evening. We’re just going to go through these doors to a place you can get cleaned up and wait.”

Chance rested his fingertips on the small of my back as we filed down a few hallways behind the nurse. She came to a stop in the middle of an unoccupied private patient room with a bathroom. I examined the room, taking notice of the large television and nice sitting area on the other side of the space.

“You can get cleaned up in there. I’ll bring extra towels and blankets so you can rest.”

“Thank you, but will you guys not need this room?” I nibbled my bottom lip.

She shook her head. “This is a new unopened wing and right now we only would have to use it for overflow. Thankfully, we haven’t had to just yet. You must know some important people to get this treatment.” Her eyes trailed over each of us, and a solemn expression inched onto her face. “I’m sorry I can’t offer any of you clothes. We only have gowns.”

“It’s fine.” Chance exhaled. “We’re fine.”

Her eyes expanded, realizing who he was. Clearing her throat, she tore her gaze away, focusing on me once again. “Anyway, I’ll return shortly.” She sped out of the room.

“That’s all we need.” Chance slid the hood off his head.

“I don’t think she cares who you are.” Nico shrugged. “Even if she did, there’s that HIPAA privacy shit.”

Chance shrugged, ignoring him. “Baby, do you need me to help you clean up, or do you have it?”

I lowered my gaze, absorbing my soaked attire. “I can do it. Just let me know if there’s any update.”

Pulling me into his chest, he hugged me. I wrapped my arms around his waist for a moment then disappeared into the bathroom. As I undressed, I heard him and Nico discussing the traumatic events of the evening, but it was drowned out the minute I turned on the shower.

I removed my clothes and stepped in. Leaning my face against the shower wall, I watched as blood flowed down my body, circling the drain before vanishing below. Tears plunged from my eyes as the reality of the danger finally hit me. I wasn’t scared for myself. The thought of anyone I love getting hurt or worse, dying, pained me to no end. What if I’d lost any of my close friends or my boyfriend?

Roxy was innocent, yet someone purposely targeted her.Why hurt the youngest waitress at the club?Perhaps it was because she was the most vulnerable. Alejandro was fucking disgusting.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Three knocks ripped me from my shower thoughts. “Yeah?”

The door opened. “Just checking on you,” Chance said. “You’ve been in here for a while and I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

I bobbed my head.

“Amber?”
