“How did she know I was there, on the beach?”

“My home and part of the area around it are protected by wards and powerful magic where no demon can reach us. You’d walked quite a way and gone past the protection.”

My eyes widened. “Just how far had I walked?”

“Around ten miles.”

“Ten miles? But I’d only been out of the house for a few minutes. It’s impossible. I don’t move that fast.” I held out my hands.

He studied me closely. “Because you were deep in thought, you may have used preternatural speed without even realising it.”

“What? So, you’re telling me I have superhuman powers now?”

“Like I said, Donna, you have some of my venom and angel blood inside you. That doesn’t make you invincible, but it can give you a very small amount of power.”

“Like my wounds healing?” I indicated to my now undamaged legs.

“Yes, exactly that.”

I let out a nervous laugh, Antoine looked concerned. Unable to help myself, I went up on tiptoe and kissed him thoroughly until he groaned into my mouth. His erection pressed against me, and my body turned liquid.

“That was one hell of a kiss,” he said with his mouth pressing kisses into my neck.

“Hmm,” I murmured, running my hand through his short hair. “It was.”

“Why did you laugh?” he asked, raising one eyebrow.

“Initially, after dragging myself away from your hot body.” I paused to give him a slow once-over. “I came out for a walk to clear my head and try to put everything into perspective. And look how it turned out.”

“Donna, I know you need time for all this. We’ll work through it together. You know, sit and read passages from the Hybrid Histories together. That way, I can help you make sense of everything.”

A smile lifted my lips. “I like that idea. Maybe long walks outside your safety zone aren’t such a good idea, are they?”

He chuckled. “Probably not.” He eyed me with speculation. “Look, before we do all that and have breakfast, do you want to take a long, hot bath with me?”

His eyes had turned almost black with passion; I was beginning to love that expression on him. Even after my little transformation into an almost-Hybrid and battling with the undead, my body reacted favourably to his suggestion.

“I like the sound of that. Um, there is one thing I’d like to ask you.”

“Sure, go ahead.”

“Would you be able to fly back with me in your arms?” I felt shy and embarrassed for asking such a stupid thing.

He just stared at me.

“Okay, sorry I asked. We’ll walk.” I headed away from him, my cheeks heating with embarrassment.

He caught me by the wrist and turned me around. “Hey, hey, hey. Don’t be upset. I’d love to fly with you in my arms. It just took me by surprise, that’s all.”

And as I watched, his wings slowly unfurled. The glossy feathers were radiant in the early morning sunlight. He held me, my back to his front, and before I knew it, we were soaring high in the sky. I let out a shriek of joy as we flew out over the sea, past the cliffs, and back again, finally landing on the balcony outside his living room.

I was breathless with excitement. Heady on the exhilaration of flying in his arms, tears filled my eyes. I reached up to stroke his face, his eyes going half-mast at my touch.

“Thank you,” I whispered. “That was beautiful. Would anyone have seen us?”

“No. I have the ability to make myself invisible. We were perfectly safe.”

My arms circled his neck, and I kissed him again, harder than I had on the beach. This man was doing all sorts of weird and wonderful things to my emotions, and it made me lose the power to speak. Part of me wondered if I was already falling under Antoine’s spell. Maybe this fated mate thing was strong. Falling in love quickly was something I’d never believed in, but now I was beginning to wonder if perhaps that was what was happening.
