I began to think she was onto something here. Something that would make sense of all this madness. “Because the demon wanted me dead?”

She thrummed her fingernails on top of the table. “Maybe that’s part of it, so Antoine would discover your body. But I think it’s more likely that your soul was already searching for his, and that’s why you chose here.”

The sound of male voices reached us; they were laughing about something. Jeanie got up. I rose from the table and followed her over to the cooker.

“Let me help you, Jeanie.”

“You don’t have to, love. That’s what I’m here for.”

“Well, I think you’re much more than just a housekeeper. You remind me of my parents and how they cared for me. I see it in the way you are with Antoine. And really, it’ll be a pleasure to help you.”

And I wanted to get to know her and Mac more, especially if I agreed to the transformation and became a permanent fixture.

Her smile widened, and not knowing what else to say, I embraced her. I’d missed the closeness I had with my mum, and although Jeanie would never replace her, I think we were destined to become close.

The door to the kitchen swung open, and the men hesitated in the doorway. My eyes were full of tears, which I brushed away. Jeanie did the same with her eyes.

“Everything okay?”Antoine asked, his voice gentle with concern.

“Yes. It’s all good.”

Antoine

Something had happened with Donna and Jeanie. The tears they shared told me enough. When I was checking over my bike with Mac, I could sense my mate’s heightened emotions. I’d closed off my mind because I got the impression those thoughts were private. I was sure she’d tell me if she wanted me to know.

I loved the fact that Donna pitched in to help prepare breakfast. She didn’t know it yet, but she was the only woman I’d ever let inside my home. When I’d hooked up with women in the past, I’d either gone to a hotel, their place, or Sal and Luca’s. My friends had a huge mansion, so there was always plenty of room for me there. Perhaps I’d take Donna over to meet them. But if I did, it wouldn’t be until she was a Hybrid and my full mate. I was extremely protective of her and didn’t want to risk a demon ambush. There were possibly thralls or lesser demons hiding just outside my protection zone, waiting for us to make a mistake.

Maybe after we’d studied the Hybrid Histories for a while, I’d take her out on my bike. Having her squashed up against me sounded like a great idea. And where I intended on going was close enough for us to return if I sensed any danger.

“Would you boys like tea or coffee?” Donna waved two mugs at us.

“Black coffee for both of us, please.”

“No sugar either because we’re sweet enough,” Mac added.

Jeanie shook her head and grinned. “You two really think highly of yourselves, don’t you?” she teased as she flipped the bacon over in the pan.

Donna placed the mugs down on the table in front of us and eyed us with speculation. She tapped her chin with her fingers.

“Say what’s on your mind.” I crossed my arms over my chest, noting the way her eyes darkened.

“Yeah, my lady has a thing for muscles.”

She rolled her eyes. She’d read my mind.

“Yes, I do. Stop it.”

I couldn’t help the smirk that covered my mouth.

“I don’t know about you, Jeanie,” she called out, still studying us, “but I’m sure we could get a trade-in for these two. You know, younger, hotter models. What do you say?”

She stopped cooking, her eyes going from one to the other. “You know what, Donna? I think we might just do that.”

They began to giggle. Mac tutted, and I laughed. I honestly didn’t mind if this was at our expense. It was just good to see Donna looking happier.
