Donna

I watched Antoine disappear out the back door. A sigh of appreciation slipped through my lips as I watched him move. He had a feline grace and a swagger that would melt the coldest of hearts. And panties. My body reacted, turned on by how gentle and attentive in bed he was, and how he could turn into a lethal predator with the flick of a switch. My fantasies turned to being chased by Antoine, taken down to the ground, and ravished until I was begging for mercy. Oh, God. I needed another shower.

“Donna! Will you stop, please? You’re driving me insane with your thoughts.”

Knowing he’d heard one of my wicked fantasies, one I’d had for years, made my body burn.

“Donna, are you okay?”

Jeanie had walked over to me and appeared concerned, studying me closely.

“I’m fine, why?”

“Your eyes look a little wild and your face is on fire.”

“Oh, it’s nothing,” I lied.

Jeanie pulled me to her and hugged me tightly. She was shuddering, and I heard a small sob come from her.

“Are you okay? Have I done something wrong?” I asked.

“No, love. You’ve done everything right.” She patted my cheek. “I can see how happy you’ve already made Antoine.”

“Here,” I said, leading her to the kitchen table. “Let me get you a drink.”

There was fresh coffee on the go, and I poured it into two mugs.

“Milk, no sugar, please,” she said before I could ask.

I sat next to her, and we closed our hands around our mugs.

“I won’t deny that this whole new world is scaring the hell out of me. There is so much I want to get straight in my head. But…” My mind wandered as I stared down at my drink.

“What, love?”

“The pull I have that brings me closer to Antoine is more than a little scary. I’ve never been with a man who brings out such strong emotions in me.” I paused to take a sip of my coffee. “After all I’ve been through over the last twelve months or so, this is so overwhelming. I tried to fight it, but…” I looked helplessly at Jeanie.

She took my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze “Mac and I aren’t mated. We were human before we were given a long life to look after Antoine and his mate when she arrived.” She smiled again. “But he’s still the love of my life, and after many centuries, our love is very strong.”

“I just hope I’m strong enough for this life. I mean, look at me.” I let loose a small laugh.

“Donna, Iamlooking at you. And believe me, you are strong enough. What Gustav did to you, to your life, most people would have taken their own life long before that.”

“I thought about it plenty, especially after my parents died. And his voice, it was compelling.” I paused, eyes gazing off at some unseen image. “Maybe… maybe somewhere in the back of my mind, the Fates were telling me I had to live.” I shrugged and took a deep breath.

Jeanie eyed me with speculation, brows raised. “Tell me, do you believe in fate?”

“You mean like the Universe calling out, that kind of thing?”

She nodded.

“Up until I almost killed myself, no, I wouldn’t have.”

“Have you ever been to this part of the country before? Specifically to this coastline?”

“No, never. I come from the other side of the country, hundreds of miles away.”

“Then why do you think you came here?”
