“We can, using salt and some holy water, but without our other half, it’s only temporary and they will return.”

“So, this Clement guy created Hybrids?”

I grinned. Clement would love her words. He had a good sense of humour.

“In a way, yes. We were given territories to watch over and protect, along with a couple to look after us. Like I have Jeanie and Mac.”

“Say if I hadn’t come along or refused to be with you?” she prompted.

“Then the three of us would die, as you would, in a very short space of time.”

“That’s harsh, isn’t it?”

“Hmm, yeah, I guess. But when we fade, a new Hybrid is created to watch over the territory.”

“This is why Gustav wants me dead. I die, then you, Jeanie, and Mac would pass too.”

I stroked her hair away from her face. Her expression was almost pained.

“The demons will go to any length to kill our mates before we even know about them.”

Her brow creased, and she tugged at her lower lip, deep in thought.

“How is it that Gustav knew about me before you did? Surely Clement, in his wisdom, should’ve made it so that my mate found me first.”

I shrugged. “I agree with you, but the Fates have strange ways of going about things. They don’t make anything easy for us. This had nothing to do with Clement.”

“Well, if I ever meet Clement, I’ll still have a few things to say to him.”

I was sure she would. My mate might have been vulnerable when we first met, but she had a core of fire and steel.

“Just one more thing.” She paused.

I could sense she was troubled, so I held her closer to me as we looked at the water.

“You can ask me anything, Donna,” I assured her.

“Does a Hybrid feel it when he or she is going to die?” Her voice wavered.

Cupping her face between my hands, I watched as her eyes filled with unshed tears.

“No one I know has met that fate. But I’m told that they can sense when death is near. Apparently, they can feel the death of their mate too. Then their lifeforce begins to fade.”

She gasped, her hand going to her mouth. “Oh, that’s terrible. So sad.”

“I know. I cannot even begin to imagine how that must feel. Some choose to take their own life at that point, along with the couple who looked after them for all their long lives.”

She hugged me close, her body shuddering. She wasn’t crying, but I guessed it was the enormity of what would happen if we didn’t complete the mating ritual. I only hoped that someday soon she’d agree to mate with me.

Donna

Antoine had certainly given me a lot to think about. If I was honest, I found it all a little daunting. In reality, I was in control of the fate of three peoples’ lives, plus my own. That was a huge responsibility. Admittedly, the thought of bonding with Antoine aroused me, even the taking of blood. I was very afraid of the twenty-four hours afterwards, though.

“I have a question for you now.” He’d stopped at the bottom of the steps.

“Sure, ask away.” I smiled. “I think you’ve earned the right to ask me something after all my questions to you.”
