Fortunately, Donna didn’t hear, still focused on the monsters heading our way.

“No. Demon problem. I’m with Donna at the viewpoint not far from mine. I may need a little help.”

“Okay. How many?”

“Four familiars and four lesser demons.”

“Be there in two minutes.” He hung up.

Donna turned to face me. “Who was that?”

“Luca De Laurentis. We’re going to need a little help with this problem.”

“But how can they get here in time?” She swallowed loudly. I could sense her heightened anxiety.

“Preternatural speed. They’ll be here in two minutes.”

“Is Gustav with them?” She inclined her head towards the group.

They were almost upon us now. I moved behind my bike. It wouldn’t give us much protection, but I could lift it up and throw it at the fuckers if I had to.

“Very brief lesson,” I began, not taking my eyes from them. “I don’t think we have a whole lot of time. Gustav is one of the higher demons from hell. Not only does he have familiars, but lesser demons too. He uses them first. Essentially, he’s a coward. He’d rather evaluate how we do against them and use their lives up. They don’t mean anything to him. They’re only a means to an end.”

“Oh, God.” She shook her head.

“We can kill the lesser ones and familiars…”

“But if Gustav is with them, we can’t kill him outright until we mate.” Her tone was grim.

“Need a little help?”

Thank fuck. I’d never been so pleased to see Luca and Salvatore in all my life.

“Just a little.” I turned to face Donna, hands on her shoulders. “Stay behind the bike and don’t move. Do you understand?”

She nodded.

I kissed her briefly on the lips. “Good girl. We won’t be long.”

“I’m not letting you fight them without me. I can’t stand by and watch, Antoine.”

I looked at the fear in her eyes. Not for herself but the fact I could get injured.

“Don’t worry, babe. Nothing’s going to happen to me or you.”

Donna

I hardly noticed Antoine’s friends as they headed off to face Gustav’s underlings. My focus was on the man I was terrified of losing. It was as though my soul was crying out to save him. I’d only experienced this kind of fear when I lost my family and friends, and it weighed down on my chest like a physical thing.

The moment the two groups came together it was a blur. I couldn’t make out who was who of the three Hybrids. The four familiars—I guessed it was them because they died quickly—were doused in holy water, a chant said over their remains, and their souls finally set free.

They engaged three of the four lesser demons. I wondered what had happened to the fourth. Perhaps he was already dead and I hadn’t seen because they were moving so fast. I was rooted to the spot, fascinated and horrified at the same time by the amount of violence and the hideous noises the demons made. I heard a growl from close behind me. Whirling around, I was faced with the other demon.

“Time for you to die, woman,” it growled.

Instead of being afraid, my anger rose at its obvious disdain for me. Probably thought that I was going to cry, pee my panties, pray for mercy, or scream for Antoine to save me. Not this woman. I wanted revenge. I’d lost people at the hands of creatures like the one in front of me. It shambled towards me, and I felt my fangs slip through my gums. My fingernails became talons with no hesitation, almost as though I did this on a daily basis.
