“That won’t save you. You’re weak and not even fully mated,” it hissed.

“That’s what you think, fucker!”

A horrible noise came from it. I guessed it was a laugh.

“You’ll die like your parents and friends did… in excruciating pain. Their screams of agony were music to our ears.”

That was it. The monster in front of me had said the wrong thing. I was going to end its existence. I ran at it and raked my nails down its face. It howled and backhanded me, sending me spinning to the floor. With speed I didn’t know I possessed, I flipped myself back up and launched at it. I embedded my nails in its shoulders and buried my fangs in its neck. I had no idea if I had enough venom and angel blood in my veins to kill it, but I’d give it a damn good try. Its claws scraped my back. The pain was immeasurable, but I held on, burying my fangs and nails deeper into its flesh. If I was going to die, I was taking this asshole with me. The pain in my back began to worsen, my sight growing dim. If only I could hold on a little longer.

Then, just like that, the demon was taken from my grasp. The guttural cries and screams from it gave me some satisfaction to realise that it was dying. I began to slip to the floor. Two strong arms caught me and held me close. It was a scent I was now familiar with. I whimpered into Antoine’s neck. He was trembling.

“Fuck, Donna. I thought I’d lost you. Come on. I need to take you home and heal you.”

I could only grunt in response. The pain was burning my back like someone had poured scalding water on me. My eyelids closed. Antoine called out my name, but I was too far gone to respond.

Donna

“It’s okay, you’re safe. Oh, thank God. Donna. Hey, babe. Talk to me.”

My eyes fluttered open to be met with Antoine’s concerned gaze. My memory came back to me. I was lying in bed. I sat up, my hands going to my back.

“The demon raked my skin. I…”

“It’s okay, I healed you. Jesus, you scared me half to death. What were you thinking?”

My hand went to his cheek. He was still trembling. “I don’t know. My instincts kicked in, I guess, and I just went for the demon. You guys were all busy. I wanted to prove that I can be of use. The demon taunted me about my loved ones.”

If I’d ever doubted supernatural monsters were to blame for their deaths, I knew for certain now that they were.

“You don’t have to prove yourself. It must have been the venom and blood I gave you which helped with your strength. When I saw that asshole with his claws in your back, I…”

He stood from the bed and paced the room. I was shocked by how terrified he seemed about losing me. This mate bond was a powerful thing. I scrambled from the bed and went to him. My head rested on his chest and my arms held him about the waist. He put his head on top of mine and ran his hands up and down my back.

There was a soft knock at the door, and Jeanie poked her head inside. When she saw me, she cried out and took me from Antoine’s embrace and held me to her.

“Oh, love, you gave us such a fright.”

Her tears set me off. I noted Antoine had left the room.

“I’m okay, Jeanie. I couldn’t let the guys do it all alone.”

“Would you like something to eat?”

Her words made me laugh. “Yes, I’d like that. I’m going to head for the shower first though.”

“Come to the kitchen when you’re ready.”

After a long hot shower, I checked in the wardrobes for something to wear. Half of it was filled with women’s clothes. My size. Scratching my head, I wondered how they’d got there.

“Jeanie loves online shopping. She’s also great at judging sizes.”

A smile touched my lips. I opened a drawer to find all manner of silky underwear. My mind wandered to Antoine stripping me out of them.

“For the love of God, Donna. Stop. Please, just stop.”

“Sorry, not sorry.”I giggled.
