I knelt behind her on the bed, shutting Antoine off from me because he’d sense all the pain if I didn’t. Placing my hands on her temples, I focused on trying to make her pain recede. I honestly didn’t know if I was helping, or even if it would work. Maybe I could offer her my blood, but that didn’t seem right to me.

“Actually, that’s working. Thanks.”

“Anytime.” I smiled. “Would it help if you spoke to Clement about the way you’re feeling? Sorry if that’s a stupid question, but I’m not sure what the council does.”

“That’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll do it when we have the ball to announce your arrival as a Hybrid.” She rolled her eyes.

“You don’t like these formal things either, huh?”

“Hell, no. I’d rather be in jeans and a T-shirt.”

“Me too.” I laughed. “Shall we be rebels and dress casually together?”

She laughed too. “Oh, if only.”

As we headed down to the kitchen to eat with the others, I made myself a promise to have a quiet word with Clement. I had a few things I wanted to discuss with him. He might be head of the angels assigned to Earth, but I’d never been one to be put off by authority.

ChapterTwenty

Donna

It was the day before the ball. Antoine and Mac had gone to pick up our dresses. Apparently, they had a P.O. box and always went together to collect any deliveries. Jeanie had warned them, on pain of death, that they weren’t to open any packages. She might not have been a full-blown Hybrid with powers, but she wasn’t a lady to be messed with.

“So, here’s the plan,” she said to me as we sat in the kitchen drinking coffee, waiting for our men to return. “We’ll have a dress rehearsal when they get back.”

“Oh, Jeanie. Do you mean I actually have to dress uptwice?”

She waved a finger at me with a stern expression on her face. “Young lady, we have men to impress. We want them to be honoured that we chose to be with them.”

I couldn’t help but giggle. “Are you sure we can’t wear jeans instead?” I waggled my eyebrows at her.

“No. Absolutely no way. Aren’t you even just a little bit excited about this?”

I shook my head in an emphatic display of my distaste.

“But.” She sidled up to me. “Just imagine how much Antoine will want to take that dress off you when we get back home.”

“Jeanie,” I gasped, feeling my cheeks burn at her words.

She dug me in the ribs, and we fell about laughing.

“Well,” I said, as I wiped tears from my eyes. “I guess that could be quite good fun.”

“Okay, what are you two up to now?” Mac eyed us with speculation as they came through the door holding two boxes.

“Mac.” Antoine placed an arm about his shoulder. “I don’t think we really want to know.”

“No, you don’t,” I said, planting a kiss on Antoine’s cheek and grabbing the box from his hands.

Jeanie took the box Mac was holding, and we headed out the door.

“Oh, Mac.” I turned to face him back through the door.

He raised his eyebrows at me.

“Your wife is a very bad woman.” I winked and closed the door behind us.

“Right.” Jeanie looked at the two boxes I’d placed on the bed. “Let’s get these out and take a look.”
