“No, love. We don’t. We’re given the gift of long life solely to look after Antoine.” She smiled.

I nodded my understanding. “Thanks. I just wanted to get that straight in my mind.”

“I think it might be best to rest for a while. When you feel a little better, we’ll try and break it all down for you.” Jeanie smiled.

I smiled back because it was one of the first genuine smiles filled with warmth I’d seen for months.

“Look.” Antoine took my hand. “It might be hard for you to believe, butnothingwill happen to you here. Jeanie will stay in the house with me, so you don’t feel threatened.”

My heart felt a small sliver of warmth seep into it at his gentle words. It was true, I would feel safer knowing another female was around.

“Thanks,” I murmured.

My head felt heavy, as though I’d been sedated. As my head hit the pillow, I felt warm lips on my forehead, and then I drifted off to sleep.

I’d never let on to Donna that I’d helped her to sleep. Her trust was almost zero where I was concerned, and I didn’t want to antagonise her any further. She had spirit, even though she couldn’t see it herself.

Jeanie followed me into the living room.

“I think you should contact Lorenzo and Isabella now. You’re going to need help removing that block Gustav has placed in Donna’s mind.”

“Yeah, you’re right. How the hell did he get it there in the first place?” I said, almost to myself.

“You’re the Hybrid, love. You’ll work it out.”

My phone rang. Luca’s name was on the caller display. Luca and Salvatore De Laurentis were my oldest friends. We’d been in some big demon battles together, and we’d also partied hard with beautiful women. From now on, they’d be a man down where the partying was concerned.

“Hey, Luca.”

“Antoine. How are you?”

“Confused, and in need of your parents’ help.”

“What have you done now?”

“Found my mate.”

The other end went quiet.

“Hang on. I’ll put you on loudspeaker so Sal can hear what you just told me. Be nice and don’t swear. Our parents are here too.”

“I’m pleased about that because I really do need their help.”

ChapterFour

Antoine

“Congratulations on finding your mate at last, Antoine. What do you need from us?” Lorenzo was always straight to the point, which I welcomed.

“It’s complicated.” I proceeded to fill them in on as much as I could relating to Donna. “And,” I concluded. “I think Gustav has got inside her mind. It all stacks up with him not being in my territory recently, and Donna’s problems began when he went off the radar.”

“Well, that’s one hell of a lot to take in,” Sal said. “We were going to ask for your assistance. Viktor is up to no good again. I’ll get in touch with Lilah or Karl. They’ll be able to help.”

Lilah and Karl were two unmated Hybrids. Like all of us, they had territories of their own but could be called upon to assist other Hybrids when the demons got out of hand.
