Viktor was the main demon in their territory. He was a real evil son of a bitch, even worse than Gustav.

“I think we should come over right away,” Isabella added. “We need to work out how to get the block from your mate’s mind. What’s her name?”

“Donna.” I felt a goofy smile spread my lips as I said it.

“Aw, you sound all mushy,” Luca teased.

I didn’t even mind the teasing. “Yeah, well, I’ll remind you of this moment when you find your mate.”

“We’ll be over in a couple of hours. You’d better let your mate know you’ll have more visitors. It won’t be a good thing to just turn up unannounced.” Lorenzo ended the call.

“It’s good they’re coming in person.” Mac was standing in the doorway.

“Yeah, I’m glad too. They’ll be able to explain all this to Donna. Each time I think about what to say, I get nervous.”

“Why are you so nervous?” Mac asked.

I ran a hand over my face and chuckled. “I can fight demons, thralls, familiars, and whatever other monsters hell throws my way. I knowexactlywhat I’m dealing with.” I shrugged. “But this is a whole new level for me. I’ve had lovers but always knew the relationships wouldn’t last. But…” I shook my head.

Mac sat down next to me, clapping me on the back. “Welcome to the world of relationships, Antoine. This is different because you’ve never had a mate before. You now hold another person’s life in your hands. One you’ll be with for eternity. You have forever to iron out all your relationship problems. It does get better, I promise.”

“I hope it does. Because at the moment, I feel like I’m trying to get through a minefield without setting any bombs off.”

“Antoine.” Jeanie ran into the lounge. “She’s gone. I only stepped outside to use the bathroom and she’d vanished by the time I returned. I’m so sorry.” She stood wringing her hands.

My insides turned cold at the thought she might try to finish what she started in the sea.

“It’s not your fault,” I told her. “I think I freaked her out trying to explain how her life is going to be in the future.” I was seriously pissed at the Fates. Why did they have to make this so hard?

“It could have something to do with Gustav. It has his M.O. written all over it. I’ll call Lorenzo. You might need his help sooner than we thought.”

Mac didn’t need to say anything else as fear almost crushed me. Striding to the balcony, I used my cloaking ability and unfurled my wings. I’d be able to see which way she’d gone from the sky. My emotions were usually calm, but for the first time since I was turned, I felt physically sick.

“Donna, where are you?”I called out to her via our telepathic link.

I hit what I could only describe as a brick wall. That demon was going to pay for treating Donna like this. If we didn’t get to her soon, she’d be dead. My gut told me to head in the opposite direction and over to where the cliffs were. With my enhanced vision, I saw her scrambling up the side of the rocks.

Donna

“Time to wake up, Donna. The woman’s gone. If you sneak out through the balcony, you can be away before she knows you’ve left. Head for the cliffs. It’s your best option.”

I didn’t hesitate. The voice was sweeter than it had been before, almost loving in the way it encouraged me to leave the house. In the depths of my mind, a small voice called out to me, telling me to stay with Antoine.

“No! You must finish this. It is the only way. Do not think of him again.”This time, the voice sounded a little panicked.

The pressure in my head was beginning to hurt. When I headed for the window, the pain lessened.

“That’s it. Good girl. The pain will go completely once you reach the cliffs.”

I hurried to the base of the cliffs, the voice encouraging me all the way. I stumbled and the voice became angry, making the searing pain increase so much that I cried. With the voice urging me to go on, I finally reached the bottom of the rocks and began to climb. It was almost as if someone was giving me a helping hand because I was certain I couldn’t have scaled the rocks unaided and barefoot.

I was halfway up when I felt a pair of hands clutch me about the waist and pull me away from the rocks. The scent was familiar to me now. Antoine.

“Don’t let him take you, or you’ll never have the peace you want. You must fight it!”

But I couldn’t. Antoine was far too strong. The pain started in my head. It was so bad I was afraid my brain would explode.
