Knowing that she would no longer be able to talk to him after his shift, she started to feel sad and alone. Blake knew that and she could feel that he was thinking the same. They didn’t have to share any last words as they each poured their love into their hearts. Slowly, the bond weakened as Blake shifted and turned into his human form.

Though she could still feel him, it wasn’t the same as talking to him. She distracted herself by looking around the room and thinking of a strategy to help them as soon as the attack started.

She remembered the two times she had to fight off a wolf and both times, she’d had a knife. She searched the room, trying to find something she could use. She got up and opened the drawers of the dresser only to be disappointed. There was nothing there, not even a paperclip. She sat back down on the bed right as she heard someone knock. The door opened and the man with the collar appeared. He held clothes and a bottle of water in his hands.

“Master has chosen you a night gown.” He laid it on the bed. “And I would like to light the fire for the night.”

She nodded and watched him as he kneeled in front of the fireplace and busied himself. Her gaze fell on the long metal rod that he used to poke around. She smiled. The poker was perfect. How had she missed that? As she watched him, her curiosity grew.

“Why are you the only one with a collar?”

She could see how his muscles tensed up and she knew right away that he didn’t like it. “My wolf is still too strong for me to tame. Master helped me find a way to control him.”

That was interesting. The one she thought was the weakest was actually the strongest. The Lycan demoted him to a butler to break his strong will. Niev needed to be sure Blake knew about it before they headed here.

She watched as the man stood up and placed the metal rod next to the fireplace.

“Is there anything else you need?” he asked in a friendly tone.

“No, thank you.”

He nodded and left the room, closing and locking the door behind him.

Unsure if she would be visited again, she picked up the night robe. It was old-fashioned and worn down like the dress she had on. She hated the thought of wearing another piece of clothing that likely had been worn by so many other unfortunate women. A shiver ran down her spine, yet she forced herself into the robe and laid in bed.

As she laid there, she watched the flames of the fire throw their shadows all over the room. The darker it got, the more anxious Niev became. She knew the young man waited outside. At least, that’s what he’d told her, so she tried to stay as calm as possible. She kept her mind wide open, ready for when Blake shifted again.

After the sun fully set, it was hard for Niev to keep her eyes open. Her thoughts turned into dreams as her eyes fell closed.

A Wolf’s Instinct

Blake sat against a tree next to Tristan, who was stuffing a sandwich into his mouth. Seth and Brandon were sitting opposite Blake while the other warriors were scattered all over, eating and mentally preparing for the fight ahead. Seth decided that a surprise attack would be best. They would surround the walls and climb them if possible or simply break down the gate.

They hadn’t been able to get too close, not wanting to risk exposure. They camped a few miles away and planned everything with the information Niev had been able to provide. Her strength proved itself once again–she’d given them more than they could’ve asked for. They had somewhat of a layout and a grasp of the inner workings of their enemy. For some, it might not seem like a lot, but it was much more than knowing nothing.

Seth looked up at Blake. “We can’t take them by ourselves. We’ll need the strength of many if we want to defeat them all.”

Blake thought the same. From what Niev had told him, he was an even greater threat than his wolves. “I agree.”

Brandon nodded. “We should pair everyone up so they have a dedicated partner who cannot leave their side. You two will be one, so when we encounter the Lycan you don’t have to leave your partner behind.”

Seth nodded and signaled the men to come closer. Even though Blake was sure they’d been listening in on the whole plan, Seth explained everything in detail again. He paired everyone up before they shifted.

Immediately, Blake’s mind opened and searched for Niev. He found her right away, her peaceful emotions slowly dripping into his. She was sleeping, likely exhausted from the last few days.

His mind gently stroking hers, he asked, ‘Niev?’

She was up right away. ‘I’m sorry. I’m here. I dozed off.’

He chuckled. ‘We’re coming now.’

She seemed upset about something, ‘I made a mistake. The man with the collar, he’s a wolf, and he seems to be the strongest of them. He wears the collar to tame his wolf because he cannot do it himself yet.’

He opened his mind to the others. ‘Niev was able to confirm the one with the collar to be the strongest. The man can’t tame his wolf so we have to assume he’ll be out of control as soon as that wolf is set free.’

They all acknowledged the new information and Blake returned to Niev, who was patiently waiting for him.

‘Be safe, Blake.’
