“Do you want me to leave you alone?”

“No.”

Eli stands, walking in front of the window and staring out into the dark while I sit behind him, filled with nerves.

When he turns to face me, his expression surprises me. I think it’s… acceptance.

“Apology accepted,” he says softly, returning to his seat. “But I’m not mad. It’s not like you got a nose job you didn’t tell me about. This is pretty major on the makeover scale.”

“Yes.”

“I guess what I’m wondering is what you want to happen with us. You’re, uh, immortal, I guess?”

“I am, yes.”

“I’m not.”

“I know.”

“So I’ll get old and die eventually, but you won’t.”

“No. Are you actually open to staying with me?”

“Oh, right. I skipped a few steps that I worked out in my head.” He exhales slowly. “It would be really stupid on my part not to acknowledge how connected we’ve always been. Look at us now. As adults, we fell right back into it, but it’s even better now. Now there’s love.”

My jaw drops as hope blooms in my chest. “Love?”

Eli nods. “Yeah, Michel. Love. I love you too. I knew it tonight, but I didn’t want to tell you in the afterglow of such an amazing orgasm. I didn’t want you to think it wasn’t authentic.”

I clutch my chest. “I can’t believe it.”

“I think you’re beautiful, Michel, and smart, charming, powerful, all those things you traded your soul for, but your essence didn’t change. You’re still the same guy underneath it all, and I’m so glad, because that’s my person. That’s my guy.” He brushes a tear off his cheek. “I love that guy. I want to spend my life with him.”

“You do? Gods, Eli, this is a dream coming true.”

“How do I, um, become like you? Do we have to summon a demon?”

I pull back abruptly. “What?”

“Well, I can’t sit back and let you be alone when I get old. I mean, unless that’s not what you want.”

“You want…” I can barely get the words out of my mouth. “Eli. Be clear with me. You want to spend eternity with me? Give up everything for me?”

He shrugs. “What am I giving up, really? Death? Old age?”

“At some point we may have to leave Neubrook. It will become obvious over time that we aren’t aging. Our parents, people who know us, will be suspicious.”

“Okay, in what, twenty or thirty years? We’re young now, not to mention there are plenty of treatments and surgeries to avoid aging that people know about. My life is already wrapped up in yours, and I like it. I want to be by your side and watch you achieve everything your heart desires.”

“I already have.”

“You’re not done with Neubrook.”

“You’re not disgusted? You’re not afraid of a man who kills intentionally?”

“Like you said, you would never hurt me. I know that as sure as I know my own name.”

“But I do kill, Eli.”
