He nods, falling silent for a moment. I can see him working it out in his head. “Let me ask you something. Do you kill innocent, kind people who do good deeds or mind their own business?”

“Never. I kill people who cause harm, who have evil in their hearts.”

“So, you’re like a supernatural vigilante. It’s pretty badass.”

I’m flooded with relief that he hasn’t rejected me. He doesn’t fear me.

“Maybe I could help you.”

My eyes go wide. “What? No. I can’t let you kill.”

He lifts an eyebrow. “Is that your decision or mine?” He leans closer to me across the table. “It sucked not being able to do more when people targeted you. It sucks to hear on the news that some helpless person was attacked, or a bad guy got off on some stupid technicality. It makes you feel so powerless.”

I nod. “Yes. That’s how it feels.”

He blushes slightly as he offers a soft smile. “When you kiss me, damn, I feel like a superhero. Like I could climb buildings and catch the moon in my hands.”

I’m stunned momentarily speechless. “When I kiss you? Me?”

“Yeah, you. You might not have a lot of experience, but somehow, you know exactly what to do to light me up. What we shared tonight was fucking epic. It’s like…” He pauses, biting his bottom lip in thought for a second. “Like I can feel what you feel. I haven’t had a connection like that. Not since high school with you. Maybe on some weird cosmic level, this is exactly how our lives were meant to play out. All the struggles, frustrations, and sadness spurred us both on to make big changes, yet we ended up here in little Neubrook, right back together again. I’ve never been much into destiny or fate, but it’s kind of hard to ignore it right now, don’t you think?”

I nod slowly, letting his words wash over me. “Fuck.”

“What?”

“When I made the deal with the demon, I told him I wanted all my dreams to come true, but I never said your name out loud. I never asked for love.” I reach across the table and take his hand in mine. “But this was the biggest dream of all. Finding you, impressing you, having you fall in love with me. It means even more now that you’re accepting of what I’ve become.”

“Not only am I accepting of it, I want to join you. I want to be by your side for the biggest glow up in the history of glow ups.”

I finally laugh, blinking back a few tears. “I don’t know how to make that happen, but I know someone I can call. The three men from New Onyx are vampires.”

Eli’s eyes widen. “The three brothers who don’t look a damn thing like brothers?”

I chuckle. “Yes. They are chosen family.”

“Wow. I was hanging out with vampires tonight.” Then he chuckles. “That’s why one of them said he scented me.”

“Yes. You should think about it though. It’s not for the faint of heart. You literally die before you’re turned. All your bodily functions are different, and then there’s the blood drinking of course. I have to take blood every few days or I become violently ill and weak.”

Eli nods, obviously considering my words. “Everything else seems to work.”

“Did you notice how little I actually eat?”

“Yeah. I thought that was about keeping your body in shape.”

I shake my head. “No. Too much and I’ll vomit. My digestion moves too slowly now. Also, all your senses are enhanced, so every flavor is incredibly strong. Some vampires don’t eat mortal food at all. I do still enjoy wine and a bit of coffee. Liquids are more palatable.”

“Ah, yeah, so when you set up the whole kitchen, that was like super speed or something?”

“Exactly. When I found the kittens, I was out hunting for blood. These are things you have to do to survive.”

“What does it taste like? Blood.”

“Everyone is different and it shows in their blood. You taste their emotions, their lifestyle choices, their health. You taste their heritage and their memories. Sometimes it’s sweet, sometimes bitter.”

“But you like it?”

“Ineedit. They call it bloodlust because you desire it so much it drives you crazy.”
