“And you want to bite me?”

I chuckle, nodding my head. “My teeth throb every time we’re close.”

“Because of how you feel about me?”

“Yes. My desire for you, my love, all wraps around me and then the bloodlust kicks in.”

“That sounds kind of sexy. Does that make me weird?”

“No, my love. It makes you as perfect as you’ve always been.”

Silence lingers between us for a few seconds that feel like hours. I can tell from Eli’s expression that he’s thinking about everything he learned tonight.

“I have questions,” he finally says.

“Ask me anything.”

“What do you do with the bodies?”

“The first one I made look like a suicide, which was plausible given what a piece of shit he was. I found his stepson selling his body to avoid going back to the abusive man. As you know, I have no tolerance for bullies.”

“Right. The second one?”

“Left his body in a bad part of town. Police ruled it a drug deal gone bad.”

Eli nods. “And Dale?”

“He drunkenly stumbled into the lake and drowned.”

“Clever. What are you planning for Garrett?”

“Do you really want to know, Eli? You could still claim plausible deniability.”

“What would you do if you got caught or were suspected of it?”

“Compulsion. It’s one of my gifts. I use it to erase the memories of those I feed from. I would simply convince the police it wasn’t me.”

“Then I don’t need protection.” He offers a sly smile. “Or you could make me forget I know.”

“Now who’s the clever one?”

Eli chuckles, reaching for my hand. “I want to know. I want…” He blows out a breath. “I want to help.”

“No, Eli. I cannot involve you. This is my burden. I won’t have it weigh on your conscience, and I don’t want to use compulsion on you. I want things between us to be honest and without any doubt that you are being manipulated by me.”

“But I already know that. I knowyou, Michel. I want to be by your side for all of it. The highs and the lows.”

The sincerity of his words, the earnest look in his eyes, and the heat of love and desire pouring off him weaken my argument. It is a dream that Eli would join me, not only in my revenge but in eternity, but is it too selfish of me?

“It’s not easy, Eli.”

“And regular life is?”

“You have a rebuttal for anything I say, don’t you?”

“Probably I was very good in Sales.” He scoots closer to me, linking our hands together. “Don’t you see, Michel? I’ve been flopping around, trying to find a place that fits, and all along, it was here in Neubrook with you. Wild, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”
