“Psy, from the first time I saw her I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. Lexi is the realest woman I’ve ever met, I don’t need to have known her long to know how I feel about her.”

Besides, from what I’ve heard about Psycho, he saw Evie once across the prison visiting room and became obsessed with her. He has no room for judgement on how long I’ve known his sister.

“I’m not promising anything, but I’ll talk to her.”

“You will?”

This is a day I’ll not forget.

“Yeah so don’t fuck it up cause I won’t do it again.” He holds my stare for longer than I’m comfortable with before adding, “I’ll go get Rosie from Olivia and then we’ll go. Be sure to have your girl… make sure your ex is comfortable while we’re gone.”

“Will do.”

“Don’t be long.”

Walking through the bar, I climb the stairs and find Shaya lying on the bed with her phone in her hand.

“You’re back. I was wondering…” Before she can go on and on, I hold my hand up to stop her.

“I’m not staying long, I’m just here to check on you before I head out again.”

She sits up. “How are we supposed to work this out if you’re never here? What am I supposed to do, stay in this room forever?”

I wish she would, in someone else’s room, in someone else’s house, in someone else’s town, but that’s too much to wish for. Keeping my cool is easier now I know she’s going to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

“It’s not for much longer,” I lie. “I’m getting my shit together, I promise.”

I take the quickest shower of my life and spray an extra pump of cologne on my best hoodie. I glimpse a sight of Shay and her frown sets me on edge.

“What?”

“Why are you getting dressed up?”

Scrutinising myself, I say, “It’s hardly dressed up, this is what I always wear.”

“I’ve never known you to shower in the middle of the day and wear cologne.”

Snorting, I grunt, “You make me sound like I’m usually a hobo.”

“Hardly. But I know you, you’re making an effort. Who for?”

Knowing this is going to blow up any second, I amp up my attempt to keep her calm.

“Babe, I’ve been running around all morning, I can shower when I’m all sweaty and shit. You’d rather I smell?”

Her shoulders sag and she loses the gust to argue.

“Sorry, my head is all twisted up at the moment. Nothing is going how I imagined.”

“I never imagined you’d threaten to snitch on me…” before she can pathetically defend herself, I continue, “But we’ll get there.”

“As long as I’ve got you, you’ve got nothing to worry about. I can make you happy, Vin, trust that.”

I clip my watch in place and lie through my teeth, “I’m trying.”
