“Crime is higher this side of Eastford, burglaries especially.”

“If they’re brave enough to break in here and then make it out alive, they’re welcome to the nothing I have.” I laugh. “Do you like it?” That’s much more important.

“Yeah, like I said, it’s nice.”

Good, because part of my plan is coming home to her every fucking night. As far as I’m concerned, anywhere is going to be a home as long as she’s there.

We order Chinese takeout and slouch on the sofa while we eat. The coffee table becomes littered with our leftovers and empty containers. I’m content to leave it there till the morning. I’m not wasting a second with her.

With her lying on one end and me on the other, her legs over me, I massage the back of her calves. Her soft moans hit me in the balls.

“You haven’t mentioned anything about your family.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Anything, everything?” She laughs.

Digging my thumbs deeper into her soft muscle, I continue to turn her into a relaxed state.

“I’m the oldest of three children to Lorna and Daniel Hayes. I have one sister, Jenna, and one brother, Kane. He turned eighteen the week before I left town. My dad was a Road Wrecker. He was the VP under Dodge but he got into a road accident and it left him paralyzed from the waist down. I have aunts, uncles, and cousins but I ain’t wasting time telling you about them. You’ll meet them all one day.”

Her brows shoot up and I laugh. “You’ll meet my family soon enough. It’s gonna happen.”

“We’ll see.”

She can fight against it for now but it’s going to happen.

“What about you? Parents? Other siblings that hopefully are friendlier than your brother?”

She laughs. “Just Louis, no other siblings. My mum ran off when we were kids and my dad died a couple of years ago.”

“Was he a Road Wrecker?”

Her snort catches me off guard. “No. The only thing he was loyal to was the bottle. Mum left because he was a drunk, and hit her until she couldn’t take anymore. She didn’t take us with her and left us to deal with his version of love.”

Her sarcasm sets me on edge. “What was his version of love?”

“Oh you know, hugs and kisses, the belt and punches. Choosing to waste his money on alcohol rather than food for us. We spent most winters without heating because he wouldn’t waste money on gas. Sometimes he wouldn’t even realise the electric had run out for days on end cause he’d get so drunk.” I sit listening to her list all the horror she was raised in. If her father weren’t already six feet underground, I’d put him there myself.

“Louis took the brunt of his anger. We stayed out of the house as much as we could. It was tough but we got through it.”

She slides her legs from my hold and crawls up my body. “I don’t want to talk anymore.”

I slide my hands into her hair as she tries to distract me with her kisses.

“I want to know everything about you. The good and the bad.”

She holds my gaze. “Maybe. If you earn it. Tonight was more than anyone I’ve ever told aside from the prison therapist. Kiss me, Manik.”

As much as I love hearing her say my name, I need to hear her call me by my given name. For most of my life, I’ve been referred to as Vinny or Vin. But to her, it’s different.

“Vincent. You call me Vincent.”

And she does, for most of the night.
