“Hey, how are you getting on?” I ask, sliding a ring he bought me last week onto my third finger. Panic erupted within me until he made it clear it was just a gift.

“I’m fine. You sound chipper today.”

He’s currently on a run with the club and it took hours to convince him I’d be okay with him gone.

“I got dressed today, I’m feeling good,” though it’s a lie. I have a reason to be dressed. “I plan on reading through everything I’ve written.” Again, it’s a lie.

“I’ll be home tonight, not sure on the time but it’ll be tonight.”

“I’ll be here waiting for you.”

“I like hearing that, babe. More than you know.”

Vincent has shown me the man he is over the last few weeks. Not in his soft touches, not in the way he speaks to me, but in how he’s never left my side when mentally, I was a million miles away from him. He’s a constant in a life that never stands still.

Once our call comes to an end, I head for the place where my closure is at.

Matt’s father works in the last running factory in Eastford. He’s worked there all his life and Matt would’ve ended up like him if he didn’t hurt me, resulting in his eventual death. As I walk through reception, many people are around and I smile brightly and ask the lady behind the desk for Colin, telling her it’s a family emergency.

Her sharply defined brow arches. “Family?”

“That’s what I said.”

She leans over the desk and presses the button on the intercom system.

“Colin to reception. Colin to reception.”

I nod my thanks and step back. The place is outdated, and I guess whatever profits they’re making, they’re not using them to redecorate and modernise.

The door creaks as it opens and Colin steps in and I savour the shock of him seeing me standing here. He gets over it pretty quickly and tries to hold himself tall.

“I heard you were in the hospital.”

“No thanks to you.”

He huffs, “I don’t know what you’re on about.”

“Of course, you don’t. But let me make this clear, I know it was you, and I know it was Duncan. I’m not here to make a scene…”

“Then what are you here for?” he snaps trying to keep his voice down. “To tell me you’re going to set your brother and his club on us?”

“I’m here to tell you that won’t happen. If I had told my brother it was you, you would’ve been dead weeks ago. I’m healing and I won’t spend the rest of my life suffering from nightmares or living in fear because of you. I’ve found a life I’m going to live. I’m not the person your son made people believe I am. I made one wrong move and I paid for it. But if you or Duncan come for me again, if you see me out in town or even glance at me, I’ll tell my brother what you did to me, and he’ll rain down hellfire on you before letting you both die extremely slow deaths.”

He pales and steps back. I don’t think he even knows he did it. His fear radiates around us, and satisfaction runs through me.

“You of all people should understand what a person is capable of when pushed far enough.” I move closer to him, fully aware the lady behind the desk is watching like the nosy bitch she is.

Keeping my voice down, I say, “If I ever see either of your faces again, it won’t be my life that’s over. Do you understand?”

He nods.

“I need to hear it. I need to hear you understand.”

“I understand,” he grates out.

Smiling sweetly, I say, “Then let’s hope we never set eyes on each other again.”

Turning my back on him, I leave with the closure I was seeking. I can truly let the past die. From this moment on, I have a life that I fully intend on living.
