I watch the fire in his eyes being doused by her words. He looks as if she hit him.

“Don’t insult me, Mia. I’d never hit you.Ever,” he vows.

“Then be the loving man I know and listen to Basque. Don’t lead this to violence. There’s enough blood on your hands. Don’t let Basque’s blood be on your hands too,” Mia whispers. “Please.”

I had already liked Mia as a person before this day; however, her sticking up for me at this moment made me like her more. She has a big heart. She doesn’t mind going against the grain if it means doing what she feels is right. She’s like Felicity in that sense. Probably why they get along so well.

“For Christ’s sake. I’m not going to kill him, Mia,” he groans. “I’m just going to knock some sense into him. Now, will you please leave?”

“No,” she shakes her head. “He isn’t going to fight you back. He’s just going to take the hits.”

“Then that’s his problem. Now, leave.”

“No.” She crosses her arms in front of her. “This is Felicity and Basque’s life, not yours.”

“Mia, for crying out loud, if you don’t leave, I’m going to drag him down to the basement!”

Out of nowhere, Mia grabs a glass off the table and slams it to the ground. The glass shatters everywhere. She doesn’t even bat an eyelash.

“If you drag him down to the basement, I will pack all of my shit and leave you. And, before you try to pull your macho bullshit, look me in the eyes and see if you think I’m joking,” she says with venom in every word.

“Signora Santoro, I appreciate your concern but I don’t want you to stress the babies. I’ll be okay and accept whatever punishment the boss gives me,” I say with my head lowered.

“No. You won’t. You are the only thing that makes Felicity happy. I refuse to let anyone take away her happiness,” she replies. “And, I do meananyone!”

“Are you done? Will you let me do my job now?” Nico asks.

“Will you give him permission to marry Felicity?” she retorts.

She isn’t backing down and neither is he. I should have waited until she wasn’t around to bring this up. Lately, my worry for Felicity has consumed me, clouding my judgment over everything else.

“Mia, leave us. Now,” Nico orders. “Last warning before I have him dragged to the basement and you’ll be the one to blame.”

I look at Mia, who is on the verge of tears.

“Signora Santoro, please, go rest. This isn’t worth getting upset over. Everything will be okay,” I smile softly then lower my eyes again.

“Nico Santoro, I’m going to leave but when I see Basque again, there better not be even a single scratch mark on him or I’m leaving you,” she sniffles. “Think about someone other than yourself for once. Think about Felicity’s happiness and Basque’s loyalty to you. Please.”

With that, she walks towards the door. The doors are opened for her and she exits the room. When the door closes, I hear several of the guys let out the breath they had been holding.

“Now…” Nico says, “Let’s get down to business.”

Chapter Nine

Felicity

Two days had gone by and I hadn’t heard from Basque. I was consumed with worry and fear of the worse. I knew my brother and what he was capable of. Basque having a relationship with me behind Nico’s back would be a dagger to the back. Nico didn’t allow disloyalty in his organization.

“Where the hell are you, Basque?” I wonder out loud, pacing in front of the hotel room.

As though someone is listening in, the hotel phone rings. My heart nearly jumps out of my chest. No one knows I’m here except Basque and Rosaline.

Slowly, I walk across the room and answer the phone.

“Hello?”

“In an hour, a car will be out front to pick you up,” Nico says, making fear rush through me.
