My mind returns to this morning when my face was buried between Sophie’s thighs.

I set Finley down on her belly on the playmat next to her sister, Poppy, who is already enjoying tummy time. I didn’t know that was a thing.

Parenting is filled with surprises.

Like their arrival at three o’clock on a Tuesday afternoon three weeks early. That was normal for multiples we were told.

From the moment they arrived, healthy and happy, we’ve been obsessed with them.

Finley Kate and Poppy Renee are two dark-haired beauties with green eyes like their mom, so it would be impossible not to be.

Would I have liked to have had more time as just the two of us? Sure, but I wouldn’t trade our life together for the world. It’s messy now. Early mornings that don’t involve sex before we head out for our run, but instead, diaper changes and feedings before we load the girls into the jogging stroller and head out for the park.

Sophie working in her office for few hours in the evenings while I put the girls down.

We’re figuring it all out as we go along.

Sophie rushes past me, her silk robe fluttering around her hips. I catch her elbow. Turning her to face me, I edge her back against the wall. My hand finds the back of her neck, my thumb tilting her jaw up until our eyes meet. I’m desperate to finish our interrupted quickie this morning, but more than that I want to hold her in my arms.

“I love you,” I tell her, pressing a kiss to her jaw.

“I love you, too.” Her hands move up my chest and over my shoulders until they connect behind my neck. “Hannah is not going to be pleased if I don’t get to her room for hair and makeup by ten.”

Today is Hannah and James’s wedding. It’s wild to think that a year ago the planning meeting I attended with Hannah, with Johnathan and Sophie, is what started all of this. That a year later, I’d be engaged to the love of my life and have two precious baby girls.

When Sophie left Marion Adler Events, Hannah and James continued their planning with Johnathan, and Hannah asked Sophie to be one of her bridesmaids. I’m a groomsman, so our nanny will be in tow to help with the girls while we’re on wedding party duty.

I smile wickedly. “Two five-month-old babies are the perfect excuse to be late.”

I crave Sophie’s body even more after her pregnancy. Seeing her as a mom, a successful businesswoman, and all the things she does for our family has only increased my desire for her.

Having the twins hasn’t been all rainbows and unicorns, but I will say that we don’t know any different. If the next one is a single baby, we’ll think it’s a piece of cake. I can’t wait to have more babies with her.

“You’ve got that look again,” she says.

“What look?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “I’m good with two.” Her lips quirk. “For now.”

She’s got an IUD in now, and we’ve talked about timing and how important the next few years are for getting her business established. I have no doubt that Sophie will succeed, but I know it will take time.

“I know, but I think we should practice. A lot.”

“Tonight. Besides, I need to shower. I smell like baby vomit.”

“You think some baby puke is going to deter me?”

I run my nose along the column of Sophie’s neck, finding that sensitive spot where her ear and jaw connect. I breathe her in. She smells like sunshine andmineand okay, there might be a faint hint of baby puke.

“My mom and dad said they’d take the girls tonight so we can stay later at the reception.”

“That’s so nice of them.” She smiles, then suddenly, her eyes light up. “Or we could come back here early, have uninterrupted sex and get eight hours of sleep.”

“I like where your head is at.” I steal another kiss before I let her pull away.

“Hey,” she says, still holding my hand. “Have I told you you’re an amazing dad and partner and my best friend and lover all rolled into one?”

“I think you’ve mentioned it before, but I’d love to hear it again.”
