Page 4 of Wings of Deception

I look up at the imposing castle before me, my frayed nerves wishing I’d asked Professor Castiel for help. Now is not the time for wallowing in self-pity, Hayles.

Slipping the paper into my pocket, I open the binder and flip through the pages, hoping to find a map of this house somewhere within. It shouldn’t be too hard to find my room, but as nervous as I am today, I’d rather be overprepared.

A gorgeous man drops from the sky, dark hair blowing across his face. I can’t help the shriek that escapes me as he lands directly in front of me, his black wings spread wide behind him.

Yum. Who the hell is this guy?

Before I can stop myself, I reach a hand toward his wings, desperate to feel the soft feathers beneath my fingers. He snaps them shut, and my eyes immediately jump to his face. Piercing green eyes meet mine, assessing me as a smirk grows on his too handsome face.Shit. What the fuck was that?

“Um, hi,” I say, breathlessly. As if I could be any lamer. He doesn’t answer, only watches me through green eyes as I watch him in return.

His outfit looks more like a uniform than a style choice, with a symbol stitched into the fabric on the left side. Some combination of A and G woven together over a pair of dual blades. Something about it feels oddly familiar, but I can’t quite place where I’ve seen it before. I try not to stare at the rest of him for fear that I might start drooling, because holy shit. This guy clearly works out. Even his muscles have muscles.

I bet he’d have zero issues holding my weight while screwing my brains out.Whoa, where the hell did that come from?

As if hearing my thoughts, the man chuckles, stepping closer until my breath catches and my entire body tingles with anticipation. “Welcome to the house of the Fallen,” he whispers, trailing a hand down my arm, and all I can do is stand there, slack jawed and wide eyed. I’m utterly frozen, completely enthralled by his touch. “Let me take this.”

What the hell is he even talking about? Whatever it is, he can have it. Especially if it’s me. He can definitely have that.

It’s only when he steps away that I realize he’s taken my suitcase and is already hauling it toward the front door.

“You coming or what?” he calls over his shoulder, and I swear I hear laughter in his voice.

“Hold up! Who are you and why the hell should I trust you with my things?” I probably should have said something earlier, but I’m weak.

This guy may be hotter than sin, but that doesn’t mean I can trust him. Is he helping because he wants something, or is he actually just a nice guy?If those even exist …

He doesn’t reply, only shooting me a backward glance before stepping through the front door of the Fallen house. Heat warms my cheeks, but I shake it off and pretend the mortally embarrassing moment didn’t happen before following him inside.

A grand staircase stands front and center, winding up and seeming to go on forever. The railing is thick and looks exactly like the ones children slide down in the movies from Earth.Note to self: slide down the banister at least once before graduation.

“Do you like it?” a dark voice says from the corner where he stands with my things.

“I love it.” I sigh, turning to take in the rest of the area. “Who are you again, and why are you holding my things hostage?”

“There are far prettier things I’d rather take hostage, if that’s on the table.” He steps forward, and I swallow past the lump in my throat because holy shit … Did he just say he wants to take me hostage?

“I’m Ezekiel, house captain of the Fallen. And who are you?”

So this was who Professor Castiel mentioned earlier. I’m glad as shit that he’s not here to witness whatever the hell is currently happening between us.

“I’m Hayliel.”

“Pretty name for a pretty angel. Let me show you around your new home while we get better acquainted.”

His voice shifts when he says those last two words, darkening somehow and tugging on the very essence of my core.Fuck, he’s good.

“Student lounge areas are over here,” he says, motioning me through a doorway and into a wide room filled with students. There’s an entire wall which appears to be a screen, playing a movie I’ve never seen before, and several angels sit on the long sectional with popcorn and chips. A little further into the room is a pool table, ping-pong table, and an entire shelf of board games.

As we walk through, all eyes are on Ezekiel. Just how popular is this dude? The guys raise their glasses in salute, while the girls shoot him lust-filled glances that make me want to press myself against him and claim him as mine.

We keep walking, leaving the student lounge and heading down a long corridor.

“We also have a small library here, though it’s nothing like what’s inside the Knowledge house.” He opens the door, letting me look inside the comfortable space. There are small tables set up, a few couches, a roaring fireplace, and at least two dozen large bookshelves. Fuck.If this is small, I can’t wait to see what the other houses’ libraries look like.

Ezekiel notices the joy on my face. “Our collection is pretty varied, so whether you like history or smut, you’ll find it all in there.”

My mouth pops open, and I swing my gaze to his. The devilish half smirk on his face tells me the smut is no joke, so I try to play it off like Idon’twant to rush inside to find whatever hot books he mentioned and binge read them. “Good to know,” is all I manage before turning away and heading farther down the hall, leaving him behind. Is it smart to leave the tour guide who holds my belongings behind? Nope. But I don’t claim to be very smart.
