Nada. Still in the doghouse but at least I’m in my house.

Damn. Did you at least talk about things?

Yeah. I’m not sure what it means but I know I want to be with him.

I felt a swell in my chest as I reread his last text. Chase loved Trey, and imagining him with anyone else was hard. My brother wasn’t perfect, but I liked to believe he wasn’t an idiot.

Well that’s a step!

You should come to Pitt for a few days during your break.

YES

The front door of the condo opened again. I leaned forward a little to glance down the hallway, and a giddy grin spread across my face when I saw Jaxon.

His mouth curved into a half smile when he saw me on the couch. He gestured toward my drink and opened the fridge. “Need another?”

I nodded. He plopped down next to me and rested his arm above my head. He opened his mouth to speak as I was hit with a wave of word vomit.

“I don’t want to talk about it now,” I said quickly.

Jaxon’s shoulders dropped. “Fine by me. We don’t have to talk at all.” He placed his beer on the coffee table and pulled me in for a kiss. I wasn’t sure how much time went by as his mouth moved with mine. He took my drink and placed it next to his so I could rest my hands on his chest. He was warm, and when his body weight started to shift on top of me, Katie’s blanket seemed like a pathetic option for the chill.

I loved how he smelled and the familiar touch of his hands and lips as they trailed along my skin. I loved how his eyes grew darker when he was turned on and how his smile dug into his dimples when something made him laugh.

Everything about Jaxon consumed me. I wasn’t looking to fall for anyone when we met, but I had no idea he would end up being exactly what I was looking for.

A door opened down the hall and pulled me from my internal dialogue. We sprang apart and laughed at our reaction to being caught—like a couple of teenagers who didn’t want to be seen by mom and dad.

“Still leaving at five?” Connor asked sleepily from the kitchen.

“Yeah,” Jaxon answered for both of us and glanced in my direction. He sipped his beer and a cocky grin spread across his lips.

The idea of only being able to touch him like I wanted to behind closed doors was excruciating. I had never been so turned on just sitting a cushion away from someone. He looked me up and down right before he went into the kitchen, and my breath caught in my throat.

It was going to be a long night.

Chapter65

Jaxon

March 2016

The public beachwas about twenty minutes away from the condo. When we pulled up, the parking lot had a few cars, but the beach was completely unoccupied. Around this time of year, all the beaches in North Carolina were filled with tourists and college kids on spring break. It was also much warmer down there compared to what it was like near Lake Erie.

No one walked to the beach empty-handed since all four cars had been stuffed with coolers, chairs, blankets, snacks, and game tables. Maci walked in front of me with her hands full of grocery bags. I admired how her ass looked in her leggings and instinctively pressed my lips into a thin line. The makeout session I had with her on the couch a few hours ago wasn’t going to be enough to get me through the rest of the night. I knew she wanted me just as badly, which made restraining myself even harder.

Connor led us away from the entrance of the beach to an empty fire pit. “Some of the food trucks sell firewood,” Connor explained. “If a few people come with me, we only have to make one trip.”

“Set up camp, ladies.” Jared gestured toward Maci and Katie. The girls exchanged a look, and they both laughed at Jared’s instructions.

“I’ll get pong set up,” Reagan offered and put her chair next to the fire pit. “Jaxon and Bryson, you guys wanna play Heather and me?”

My instincts told me to look at Maci, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. It never bothered Maci before to be around girls I slept with in the past, but so much had changed since yesterday. Normally I wouldn’t care how girls chose to react, but Maci wasn’t just a random I hooked up with. Since we hadn’t talked about it, I wasn’t sure what the right reaction was.

I froze and turned to Bryson so I wouldn’t have to answer.

“Yeah, we’ll play,” Bryson said. He gestured for me to come with him, and a small group of us followed Connor back up to the parking lot. “That’s how it’s gonna be now, huh?” Bryson teased, so only I could hear him.
