Jaxon

March 2016

I didn’t haveto look up to know she had found me out on the balcony. The girl next to me at the table was halfway through her story when I saw Maci out of the corner of my eye. I wanted to look up and let her know that I saw her, but I wanted to tease her just a little bit more before I approached her about the bullshit she put me through this week.

Ever since we got back from break, she had completely shifted her mood toward me. I knew exactly what she was doing. When we got back from Port Clinton, she had freaked herself out on the car ride home and probably talked herself out of seeing me again. My friendship was more important to her than trying to see where things went with me, and she thought it would be easier to break this off if a wall was built between us.

I didn’t see it that way—I didn’t give up that easily when I wanted something.

“So, yeah, I can like show you back at my place if you want?” The girl beside me grazed my forearm with her fingertips, and I glanced up at her.

“Dibs, Becca.” Heather placed her hand on my shoulder, and I immediately shook it off.

“Yeah,” I deadpanned. “Absolutely not.”

“Jaxon—” Heather started to say something, and I turned so I could leave the table. Her tone indicated that she was under the impression that I would be leaving here with her tonight. That girl could win an Oscar for the stories she made up in her head.

When I looked back to where Maci was standing the last time I noticed her, she was gone. I didn’t want to make it obvious that I was looking for her, so when I spotted Connor and Katie at a table with Jared and some broads I didn’t recognize, I joined them.

“Hey!” Katie lit up when she saw me. I pulled her in for a side hug, and one of the girls Jared was standing with turned her attention toward me.

“I’m Lindsey.” She extended her hand, wasting no time making introductions. She had long curly brown hair and bright green eyes that popped against her light brown skin.

“Jaxon.” I smiled down at her and shook her hand.

Katie’s eyes widened, and Connor turned so he wouldn’t have to witness anything that happened next.

As I stifled a laugh from their immediate reaction, I noticed Maci’s black leather jacket a few tables away. Since she was facing some douchebag in a dark green V-neck, she didn’t know that I was staring at her.

“Do you want to take a shot?” Lindsey offered sweetly and squeezed my wrist to bring my attention back to her.

I watched Maci throw her head back with laughter, and the douchebag took a few steps closer to her when she wasn’t looking.

“Yeah.” An exasperated laugh escaped my chest as I watched Douchebag’s hand graze Maci’s hip line. He waved his hand like he had just picked lint off her jeans, and she ran her fingers through her hair.

Katie followed my gaze to where Maci stood across the balcony. She turned back to the table and reached for Lindsey’s hand. “I’ll go to the bar with you.”

Lindsey smiled and took Katie up on her offer. The two of them headed back inside, and Connor caught himself up on the scene.

He turned to face me and gestured toward Maci. “Do you know that guy?”

“Nope.” I chuckled and took a sip of my Jack and Coke.

“Are you gonna say anything to her?”

I smiled confidently. “Not yet.”

Connor looked confused by my responses, and I didn’t blame him. But he shrugged his shoulders, and I threw my arm around Lindsey when she and Katie returned with shots.

“Jaxon!” Reagan ran up to the table and drew attention from everyone around us. She wore a lit-up shamrock headband that could’ve stopped traffic and a silver sequin top that barely covered her tits.

Without looking in her direction, I noticed Maci turned around at her table. I picked up my shot and held it up to cheers. Lindsey downed her shot and placed her hands on my chest. Reagan smirked at the sight of another girl with her hands on me and moved so she was across the table from me.

“You said you aren’t gonna say anything to her?” Connor interrupted innocently. Katie giggled and wrapped her arms around his waist.

“Not yet, no,” I repeated.

Katie rolled her eyes. She was on the same wavelength as me, and I could tell she knew what I was doing. If she thought I was seriously considering hooking up with any of these girls, she and Connor wouldn’t still be standing at the table.
