“You don’t worry about it,” I repeated. “Not at all.”

“I don’t worry about it, Mace, because the entire time you’re talkin’ to him . . . I know you’re thinking of me,” he said confidently and extended his arm toward Adam. His gaze never left mine, and he continued, “I know because you haven’t let me have you since we got back, and I’ve thought about you the entire time I’ve talked to girls tonight.”

My breath caught around the lump in my throat and I drew in a shaky breath.

“Tell me I’m wrong, and I’ll let you go with him,” he threatened calmly. He shrugged and came closer so he was an arm’s length away from me. “I’ll walk away and let you go right now.”

People started to slow as they passed us to try and catch a glimpse of what was going on. I stared at the man in front of me and felt all of my walls come crashing down. My face relaxed, and I ached to run my hands down his chest and wrap my arms around his waist.

The skin around his eyes softened, and he saw right through me. He waved over my shoulder, and I squeezed my eyes shut. “She’s good, man. I’ll walk her home.”

I didn’t turn around to face Adam. Instead, I stared up at Jaxon as he closed the remaining space between us. My stomach did a somersault as his cologne flooded my senses.

“Are you serious right now?” I asked defensively.

“I did some thinking when I was at home.” He sighed. “You’re clearly not the hookup type.”

I opened my mouth to speak but he held up a hand.

“Not aFun Dipkind of girl,” he teased, putting emphasis on the term from the night this all began.

“No, I’m not.” I sighed, growing angrier. “Is that what you want to hear? That I’ve been kidding myself since day one?”

“I need you to tell me what you want,” he said softly.

I knew that what I said next would decide everything. He was giving me an opportunity to be transparent—to leave no questions unanswered, and to have no more confusion moving forward. We had been on a broken path of communication since we met, and he was trying to help me pave a new direction for us to take together.

My shoulders relaxed, and I decided to trust the man who won me over the moment he gave me his Cotton Candy Blizzard. I knew what I wanted.

“I want to try this with you,” I confessed.

Jaxon peered up at the sky like he was pondering my request. He smiled shyly. “Like a trial run?”

I nodded and ran the idea through my head. “Yeah.” I grinned. “Like a boyfriend trial.”

“Aboyfriendtrial,” he repeated and slipped his arms around my waist.

“If that word is too scary for you, we can call it something else,” I suggested.

“I’ll get used to it,” he assured me.

Before I could say anything else, he kissed me. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed myself against him.

“I’m gonna take you home now,” he murmured against my lips.

“You better,” I threatened playfully before I pulled him in for another kiss.

Chapter71

Jaxon

March 2016

“Cheers, my man,”Bryson yelled over the base in our apartment. He smiled at me from the other side of the living room and raised his shot glass. “And happy fucking birthday!”

“Happy birthday!” The rest of the room yelled.

I smiled back at Bryson and took my sixth shot of the night. It was Saturday, and we were about a half hour away from going to the bars. The pregaming was still in full swing, and I felt pretty good.
