We turned on Court Street and headed toward the railroad tracks. He slowed our pace, and I was forced to follow his lead. “Who is Katie?”

“She’s my roommate. I lost her and the people we were with at the bar.”

“What is she dressed as?”

“She’s my robber.” I laughed and looked over at him. “I’m not a very good cop.”

“You look pretty good to me.”

I rolled my eyes at the cheesy pickup line. Yet somehow, the words coming out of his mouth sounded inviting.

“Where’s the rest of your squad?” I teased.

“I had a partner.” He shrugged and smiled at me. “But you know how it goes.”

I scanned the crown in front of Jimmy Johns and spotted the bright orange fabric of Katie’s costume. I cupped my free hand around my mouth. “Katie!”

Katie bit into her sandwich and eagerly waved in our direction. She closed the space between us and looked the firefighter up and down. “Who’s this?”

I stared at him and stifled a grin. “Uhm.”

He smiled. “I’m Bryson.”

“Bryson,” I answered and turned to Katie. I wasn’t sure if I would be thanking her for leaving me at the bar or giving her shit for it. “This is Bryson.”

Chapter18

Jaxon

November 2015

My head was pounding.

I rolled over and waited for my eyes to adjust. I squinted at the red light coming off of my alarm clock. It was eight in the morning.

I groaned and buried my head back into the pillow. I played a demo reel in my mind of what I could do later since it was too early to start the day.

If I slept for another hour or two, I could down a Gatorade, pick up Pollyeyes breadsticks, and see if Maci was home. She kept bothering me to watch this show with her calledOne Tree Hill, and I figured twenty-four hours was a long enough stretch for us to move past Friday night.

“What time is it?” Heather mumbled next to me.

I felt myself already getting annoyed with her voice. I didn’t even remember coming home with her last night.

“You should probably head out,” I said into my pillow. “I have shit to do today.”

I felt the weight of my bed shift as Heather got up. I was relieved she didn’t fight me to stay and hang out for a little while.

I started to drift off again when I heard her voice from the hallway. “I can’t find my keys.”

I moaned and turned to face her. She shrugged, trying to look innocent. I knew I would have to physically hand this girl her keys to get her to leave.

“Yo,” I deadpanned and slid out of bed. I checked to make sure I had on boxers before slinking into the hall.

Heather checked the kitchen counters again while I looked over the living room. I had to do the best I could to look around the girl who was passed out on our couch, but from what I could gather, the keys weren’t there.

“Did I leave them in your room?” Heather asked.

“I don’t know, Heather, did you?” I snapped. I decided right then and there that this would be the last time Heather stayed over.
