Bryson was a dog, but I had a feeling that anything that stood in the way of him having sex was unacceptable in his book of nonsense.

After a few deep breaths and an attempt to dissect what the fuck just happened, I locked the front door and ran into my room, where I allowed myself to cry for five minutes before I got my shit together and tried to figure out what to do next.

Chapter29

Jaxon

January 2016

After five minutesof driving around the lot, I finally found a parking spot near our building.

Exactly five minutes after nine, I texted my mom to tell her I had made it back. She responded immediately and said she would call me tomorrow night when I was done with classes.

As soon as I unloaded my Jeep, I would have to find out when my classes actually were. My student portal unlocked months ago for the spring semester, and since I was getting down to my last handful of courses, I made sure I signed up right away. I just hoped that I chose a reasonable hour to start my Monday schedule.

I could hear noise coming from the apartment before I even got inside. I was halfway up the stairs to the second floor when I heard Jared yelling at Connor. They were in their usual positions on the couch, completely invested in a game of Call of Duty. Half a bottle of Tito’s was on the coffee table in front of them, along with two shot glasses and a twenty-four case of Bud Light.

“Already, huh?” I grinned over the base booming from the surround sound and tossed my bags on the living room floor.

Jared took his shot and leaned forward on the couch to see me. “Do you need any help?”

“Actually, yeah.” I gestured toward the door. “My mom sent a bunch of food, and I have a few more bags.”

With Connor and Jared’s help, we emptied the Jeep in one quick trip. Soon the kitchen counters were littered with snacks, bottles of alcohol, and refills of cleaning supplies. I stared at the haul and shook my head. This would have to wait until tomorrow. All I wanted to do was unpack my bedding and pass out.

Bryson came through the front door a little after ten. He threw his book bag on the recliner without saying a word to any of us. I could tell by his expression and how he paced down the hallway that he was pissed about something. I wasn’t sure where he was coming from, but since he had his book bag with him, that meant he had been gone all day.

“What’s up, Kennedy?” I leaned over the counter and watched him walk back down the hall. After a minute or so, he finally made eye contact with me and shook his head.

“It’s that girl I’ve been hooking up with, man,” he scoffed. “She lost her fucking mind on me today.”

This drew Connor’s attention. He was officially dating Maci’s roommate, Katie, and was also very well aware that I was friends with Maci. He leaned forward and grabbed my attention from the couch behind Bryson. I gave him a quick nod so he knew not to press the issue any further.

Bryson wasn’t just hooking up with Maci. He could be talking about a few girls, and Connor seemed to forget that detail.

“Which one?” I adjusted my tone so it came out as a joke.

“That Maci, chick! She was pissed because some girl I slept with like a year ago messaged me and told me that she has the C.”

“The C?” Jared asked without looking away from his game.

“Chlamydia,” I answered quickly. “Dude, do you have chlamydia?”

Bryson’s mouth formed a hard line, and the rest of us busted out in a fit of hysterics. My laugh lasted a little longer than theirs because I had the pleasure of picturing the interaction he was pissed about. Maci must’ve been livid, especially since I had just told her before break that Bryson had no problem lying to her.

“No, you assholes,” Bryson snapped before a smile appeared on his face. He couldn’t resist being back here with us and bullshitting about our sex lives. He continued and directed his question toward me. “Do you remember that Kenzie chick from Miami?”

I nodded. “That was like a year ago.”

Bryson lifted his arms in emphasis. “No shit!”

“Why did you let the girl you're banging have your phone? Are you nuts?” Jared asked. The game he and Connor were playing was paused now, and everyone was invested in Bryson’s story.

I fought to keep my facial expression from shifting. I got used to not having a reaction when Bryson talked about Maci, but hearing Jared talk about her as “the girl you’re banging” left a bad taste in my mouth.

Connor picked at a button on his controller, and I could tell he was getting a little uncomfortable with the conversation. The few days before break allowed Connor to get to know Maci. He liked her, and he liked her even more since she was Katie’s roommate.

“I was in the shower, and my phone kept going off. I thought it was one of you guys needing to get into the apartment . . .” He pointed to Jared. “Specifically, you because your dumbass never has your keys. So I asked her to check it for me, and she read Kenzie’s messages. She completely lost it.”
