“Jaxon?” The brunette on the other side of the counter called out. She smiled and leaned over the counter to hand me my drink. I returned the gesture and quickly turned so she wouldn’t engage in a conversation. She looked like she had some sort of compliment on the tip of her tongue, and I didn’t have the bandwidth for it.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was Maci.

Maci:

I’ll check with the chef but that should be okay.

I smiled so hard at her response that my cheeks hurt. I sipped my smoothie and took a deep breath. The gigantic weight that had been sitting on my chest for a few weeks slowly disintegrated. I officially had plans to see Maci in a few days.

Now I just had to get through the next few days and hope she didn’t change her mind.

Chapter32

Maci

January 2016

My Monday schedulewas kind of a joke. But after the first forty-eight hours I had spent back in BG, it was a much-needed break from the mess that was my life. I didn’t have a class until noon, and after that class was over I was done for the day.

Tuesdays, however, were a whole different ballgame.

I had three classes back to back, with my last class being a required section for my methods placement next year. Educational Psychology consisted of methodologies and theory mostly, but it did offer opportunities outside of the traditional classroom experience that I was excited about. There were about twenty of us in the course, and the professor made a point to get to know each and every one of us since we would be together for two two-hour sessions every week.

I truly didn’t know how I was going to survive over five hours of lectures every Tuesday and Thursday.

Educational Psychology had about fifteen minutes left in the class, and Dr. Knight showed no signs of stopping her general rundown of the course expectations and the semester calendar. I took a long sip of water, wishing it was iced coffee or something with the appropriate amount of caffeine to shake me out of my desire to daydream.

“On Thursday, I will have applications for internships taking place next summer. They come from all different spaces in education, and I encourage all of you to apply for at least two or three of them.” Dr. Knight turned to write some page numbers on the whiteboard behind her. “You will need to read the following chapters for Thursday’s class. There will be discussions, and you will be required to draw up a sample assignment focusing on one of the methodologies discussed in the chapters.”

After she had jotted down the chapters for Thursday, Dr. Knight dismissed the class. My anxiety started to cloud my chest, putting pressure on my temples and making my mouth go dry. It was the second day back in session, and I already felt overwhelmed with the amount of work I received. I knew that everything would ease into place once I got into the routine for the semester, but it didn’t make the starting point any easier.

I lingered at the table in the middle of the room while I waited for the traffic to clear out near the exit. It was littered with pamphlets for a few of the internships Dr. Knight just mentioned.

“Take a few!” she urged and fanned the table with her hands like a game show host.

“Any recommendations?” My eyes drifted over names like Phoenix, Manhattan, Santa Barbara, Tampa, Denver, and Atlanta.

“Honestly, it really just depends on what you’re looking for. All of them are great. Take a few options to look over!”

“I will. Thank you.” I gave her a small smile and slipped a few flyers into my bag.

Once I stepped into the hall, I called Katie to let her know I was on my way back to the apartment. Only when I went to pull up her contact info, I saw that I had an unread text message. It was from Bryson.

Bryson:

Hey

I took a deep breath and moved to the side of the hall so people could pass me. I had a few options for how to respond, but I opted for the simple route.

What’s up?

What are you doing later?

Had my Skittles attemptactuallyworked? I pursed my lips and decided I needed a different perspective. I pushed on the exit door of the education building and started the cold trek to Lot J. I needed to hear my voice of reason.

“What’s up?” Katie answered on the first ring.

“Is Connor with you?”
