“Yeah, I’ll be ready in like twenty minutes. I’m just waiting for my boy, Kennedy, to finish up.”

“Jaxon, my first class starts in twenty minutes. I’m just about to walk out the door.” I watched Katie pop up at the sound of his name, and I had to turn the phone away so I wouldn’t laugh into the microphone.

She started mouthing something I couldn't make out. I muted Jaxon so he wouldn’t hear my obnoxious chain of cackling. Katie could make me laugh with just her facial expressions. I had no self-control.

“Fine,” he groaned. “I’ll see you later.”

“Can you please bring me an iced coffee?” I asked before he could hang up.

“And a Fun Dip!” Katie squealed from the couch.

I threw together another comment to distract from hers. “A medium hazelnut iced coffee, please.”

“I’ll see you later,” he repeated, but I could tell by his tone that he was smiling.

“You already mentioned going there,” I teased. “I guess we’ll see just how badly you want credit for this assignment.”

“Bye, Maci.” He chuckled, and the line went dead.

“It’s fate.” Katie smiled once I set my phone on the counter. “I’m so good.”

Chapter6

Jaxon

October 2015

The monthof September went by fast.

Every Thursday between Social Justice in Sports and Journalism and Publications, I found myself standing in line at the only Dunkin Donuts on campus. I would order two medium hazelnut iced coffees and two everything bagels with cream cheese. The cute redhead with giant tits at the register began to expect my order and always had it ready for me. I made sure to compliment her every time to make sure it was something that continued.

Maci and I would sit in The Union before class, discussing everything and anything that came to mind. She always called me out on my bullshit and was never afraid to tell me how it was. I liked spending time with her, and before I knew it, our texts spread into categories that had absolutely nothing to do with our class.

It was . . . different, being around Maci as much as I was without getting laid. It was the longest I’d ever hung out with a girl and not had sex with her. Usually, I would sleep with them and then like clockwork, they would flip a crazy switch in their head. I didn’t want Maci to get all weird if I tried hooking up with her.

Since I took care of food before class, Maci would drive us back to her place for dinner. We usually didn’t eat until close to five, but we used the time in between to work on other homework and assignments. Knowing I had that time blocked out in my schedule every week was nice. Normally if a girl mentioned doing homework together, she would easily persuade me to do something much more enjoyable to pass the time. But Maci actually used those couple of hours to get shit done.

This had been our routine since I met her. Her roommate, Katie, reached the point where she expected me to be there. She was cool, and I could see why Maci was friends with her. She was also nice to look at—smooth brown skin, light brown eyes, and dark curls that she usually wore down.

Connor would be all over her. She was totally his type.

Maci was focused on whatever trashy reality show Katie had on TV. I brushed my fingers along her forearm and drew her attention away from the screen. I was beginning to like how soft her eyes got every time I touched her, like she was checking to see if I was okay.

I gestured toward the bag of shredded cheese in front of her, and she passed it to me.Her eyes flew right back to the screen and I smiled when she wasn’t looking. I liked how my touch didn’t make her nervous, but it probably helped that I did it as often as possible. It was just something that came naturally to me.

“Why have I never seen you at the bars, Jaxon?” Katie blew on her chili and added another spoonful of sour cream to her bowl. She was sitting at the small island in the kitchen while Maci and I were on the floor at the coffee table.

I shrugged. “We probably just don’t run into each other.”

“Would you pretend not to know me?”

I went to answer, but I decided to take another bite of chili instead. Maci’s face killed me, and I had to look away to swallow. She looked appalled, but I wasn’t lying.

“Jax!” Maci smacked my arm.

I laughed and let her get her hit in. “I would probably ignore Maci, too, if I’m being honest. Taking a girl home is hard when you have other good-looking girls around you. Kennedy and I are always looking for some hoes.”

Katie contemplated my response and didn’t read into my compliment. She also wasn’t offended by how I spoke about girls at the bar.
