As soon as Bryson’s door shut, Layla spun back to me. “I think my roommate has slept with yours.”

I signaled for her to leave by opening the front door. “Probably.”

Suddenly I didn’t care if I saw Layla again. Once she was gone, I grabbed the keys to my Jeep. I didn’t know where I was going, but I didn’t feel like being at the apartment.

Chapter42

Maci

February 2016

He was kissing someone. He was saying goodbye to one of his hookups.

Ever since I met Jaxon, I have seen a few versions of him. Jaxon who kicked girls out in the morning. Jaxon who kicked the shit out of frat guys. Jaxon who was empathetic and gave advice. Jaxon who cared about his friends. Jaxon who got drunk and sent sex photos.

But seeing Jaxon with his lips against some beautiful blonde babe was not the version I wanted to see.

I drove home shortly after my hot tub hangout with Bryson. Jaxon’s door was closed when I left, so I wasn’t sure if he had stayed or not after bidding his goodbyes to Blondie. It felt weird to be in that apartment with Bryson while Jaxon was there. I knew that was the risk I ran when I agreed to the hot tub, and part of me wondered if that was the only reason I agreed to it.

It pained me to think he was thriving in this wholeI need spacerequest he laid on me a few weeks ago. I missed him, and there was nothing I could do about it right now.

I’m not sure which one of us was entitled to start our next conversation based on what happened Wednesday night, but it was already Friday morning, and my messages came up empty.

I sipped my hazelnut iced coffee and climbed up the stairs of our apartment building. My last class of the day was canceled, and I decided to use my extra hour and a half of freedom to do absolutely nothing.

When I walked in, Katie was at the dining room table typing away at something on her computer.

“Hey,” she said without looking up.

“Happy Friday,” I mumbled and threw myself on the couch.

February in Bowling Green was just depressing. It was cold all the time. It looked miserable outside, and going out suddenly sounded like a chore. I was running out of time to ask Katie about a low-key evening at Sam’s request.

“We need something fun, Katie.” When she didn’t answer, I raised my head to look at her.

“I have five minutes left in this quiz,” she answered quickly.

I laid my head back down and closed my eyes. At the risk of falling asleep, I decided to cipher through all of the stressful tabs I currently had opened in my head.

I was completely swamped with schoolwork. Every day, more reading was assigned, and every other day, I had some sort of assessment. Since I was getting an English minor, most of my assessments were papers and essays. I didn’t mind the writing, but it took a lot more of my time than a quick quiz or test would.

Educational Psychology was getting better. Dr. Knight was a challenging professor, but she had a ton of experience in the field and knew what she was doing.

While my course load was hard this semester, I was learning a lot. My grades were good, and I hadn’t skipped a class yet. I really couldn’t complain.

Bryson’s tab always threatened to cause a malfunction. Half the time, it was closed. The other half, he was in my bed or on my couch, depending on if Katie was home. He continued sleeping with other girls, and I pretended to believe him when he said he wasn’t. I had even caught him at The Attic making out with someone else, and he still pushed his story. He was truly unbelievable.

Tyler’s case was still pending. Connor’s dad had done his part to get him kicked out of BGSU. Tyler ended up moving back home to southern Ohio, and the rumor was he would attend Ohio University in the fall. It was disgusting how he could just mosey on down to the next school and be an asshole there, but unless Katie pushed for domestic charges, there was nothing anyone could do.

But regardless of how it turned out, it comforted me to know that Katie wouldn’t have to see him around campus. She had to feel better knowing he was far away and out of sight. I still got sick to my stomach at the image of Tyler’s hand heading straight for my face. I didn’t mind him being so far away, either.

“Done!” Katie exclaimed and smacked her laptop shut. “Thank the fuck it is Friday.”

I sat up and watched her walk over to the fridge. She pulled out a bag of salad, and her eyes met mine when she noticed me staring at her.

“Where is Connor?” I asked.

“I’m not sure.” She shrugged. “Last time I talked to him was this morning before his class.”
