“It isn’t a text message, Alex.” I smirked. “I haven’t been able to say anything back.”

He paused for a moment. I placed a giant green bowl on the counter and leaned on my elbows next to it. I knew he had more questions.

“Areyou going to say anything back?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” I whispered quickly.

“Well, why does he want to see you?”

Heat rushed to my face, and my heart began to pound against my chest. All I told our mom was that I had read the letter. I hadn’t told anyone about the contents yet.

“He didn’t say,” I admitted. “He sounded different in this one, though, compared to the other two he sent.”

“Is he up for parole?”

“He can’t be. This is his second offense. And he said in this letter that he still has a few more years.”

Alex sighed. “Damn.”

I heard a door shut down the hall, and soon Maci rounded the kitchen corner. When she noticed I was on the phone, she leaned into the fridge and pulled out a jug of orange juice. She grabbed a bottle of champagne off the counter and jogged into the living room. I watched curiously as she held the bottle as far away from her face as she possibly could. She peeled away at the foil and winced as she got closer to the cork.

“I’ll call you later, man. I’m about to make some food,” I said into the phone.

Maci unscrewed one side of the clip on the bottle and jumped back when it didn’t do anything. I shook my head and laughed at her ability to make something so simple look so cute.

“Where are you at?” Alex prompted in a lighter tone than before.

“I’m up in Port Clinton. I’m on spring break this week.”

“That’s right. Mom told me that. Call her sometime this week to let her know when you’ll be back in town.”

“Are you able to fly back for a little bit?” I asked.

“I’ll be home for a long weekend. Bella couldn’t take off Monday and Tuesday, so we will land Wednesday night.”

I nodded just as Maci made eye contact with me. Her eyes were wide, and her mouth formed a tight line.

I held up my finger to let her know I was almost done. “Text me before you fly out. I’ll be back in BG Tuesday night, and then I’m driving home Wednesday morning.”

“Sounds good, J. See ya.” Alex hung up, and I set my phone on the counter.

“What are you doing?” I prompted playfully. I walked over to where Maci was standing with the bottle still extended from her chest.

“I can never pop it.” She laughed nervously and thrust the bottle into my hands.

I unscrewed the clip in one swift motion, and the cork shot into the couch. Some champagne spilled on the hardwood in front of us, and she ran into the kitchen to grab a towel.

“See? Nothing to it.” She wiped up the spill with her foot and grinned at me.

“Yeah,” I answered sarcastically.

She took the champagne and bounced back into the kitchen. “Do you want one?”

I nodded, and she grabbed another glass from the cabinet.

I rubbed my hands together and stood in front of the stove. “Ready to make some food?”

Maci spun around to face me and sipped her drink. She smacked her lips a few times to test the taste and gave a satisfied nod. Her hoodie cut off right at her shorts, and I caught a sliver of her stomach when she crossed her arms over her chest. I fought the urge to reach under the thick material and run my hands up her stomach.
