We’ve already updated Izan and Lyra on everything Edlynne told us, but we need to figure out where to go from here. What do we do with this many people? How long do we allow them to stay? Where will they go from here?

There are too many unknowns.

“How do we know that what she’s saying is true?” Izan scoffs across from me. “How likely is it that Zeus himself appeared in her dream to deliver a message?”

“I don’t think it’s likely,” Dreyden shakes his head. “But it’s not impossible.”

Lyra leans forward, joining in on the conversation. “The godschoseAdeena themselves to put an end to a prophecy that threatened to destroy us all. Don’t you think it would be foolish to believe there isn’t more going on here?”

“That was months ago,” says Izan, eyeing Lyra.

Lyra’s volume increases as she gets annoyed with Izan. “And? They titled her ‘High Lady of Sky’ and nothing has come of it. That title does not come without responsibility. Whether you’d like to admit it or not, it’s the truth, and we need to be more open-minded than thinking there’s ill-intent behind everything that happens.”

Izan sits forward in his chair, using his knees to support his elbows as he says, “You want me to believe that the god of all gods visited this woman in a dream?”

“Yes,” I snap, cutting him off.

Three sets of eyes land on me, taken aback by my abrupt end to their argument.

I swallow as the power pulsing through me rises to the surface of my skin, lighting my stars. Their eyes widen, and Lyra’s jaw drops.

“There was a voice in my head when Edlynne said ‘defender of the forgotten.’ He kept repeating a mantra of some sort. His voice was deep and powerful, overwhelming, and electrifying. Something changed when Edlynne said those four words, and now I feel so much power running through me I can hardly think.”

“You feel more power?” Dreyden asks as he watches my stars glow brighter.

I nod. “Yes. There’s so much power I can feel my body vibrating, but somehow I feel more in control than ever. I don’t know how to explain what I’m experiencing… There’s a lot going on inside right now.”

Izan’s question comes next. “What was the mantra?”

“Defender of the forgotten, keeper of divine ability, yielder to none.” As I say the words aloud my stars flash brighter, temporarily blinding everyone seated at the table. A jolt of energy pulses through me, making me jump out of my chair. I nearly fall backward, but Dreyden gets up and out of his chair before I can blink, catching me.

The light illuminating my stars begins to dim, leaving behind a metallic gloss around the outline of each star. They’re molten, moving around my skin like they’re doing a dance.

My power feels even more energized, even more significant than before. The battle for control I’ve been fighting for with myself feels like it has suddenly come to an end. There’s a feeling of relief that sits in my chest, and I feel lighter even with all this energy buzzing through me.

“I told you,” Lyra barks at Izan as they watch my stars. “The godsareinvolved here.”

Izan glares at her, annoyed he was wrong.

“I agree,” Dreyden nods with wide eyes. “What just happened?”

There’s a strange look on his face, and it reminds me of how he looked at me the first few weeks after I turned fae. He couldn’t keep his hands off me after my transition, and to be honest, I couldn’t keep my hands off him either. We were like wild animals, constantly finding new places to have mind-blowing sex and sneakily touch each other like horny teenagers. Our busy schedules keep us more busy these days, but we find time for each other every day.

“My power reserve capacity increased earlier when Edlynne said the words, and it just now happened again when I said them.” I feel the glistening metal branded into my skin. The texture of my skin is the same, but my stars have come to life, moving freely upon my skin.

“How is that possible?” Izan asks aloud, not to anyone in particular, mostly thinking out loud in disbelief.

Lyra shoots him another annoyed look. “Do youreallyneed someone to explain this to you, or are you shocked you were proven wrong this quickly?”

He rolls his eyes, ignoring her sharp tongue.

I look between Lyra and Izan, watching the two of them banter back and forth as though they’re an old married couple. They’re picking at each other, but in some ways, it feels like friendly fire.

Dreyden releases his hold on me, allowing me to straighten as I look over my body.

“Are you okay?” he asks, his voice full of concern… and hunger? Maybe?

I inhale a sharp breath as he watches me with a predatory look. He steps closer, but I turn back toward the conference table to face Izan and Lyra, who have now stopped arguing and are watching us.
