“Before you came to Graceport, we never saw a Barracuda in this town. Not once. Now I’ve seen them two days in a row.”

“So?” Ellie inched to the right, trying to see if Pitbull and Spike were coming into Sugar Beat. But Colt’s chest was so wide, she couldn’t see around him.

“They’re here for you, aren’t they? What did you do? Take off on your biker boyfriend? Empty out his bank account?”

Scared out of her mind and insulted to her core, Ellie thumped Colt in the center of his chest. “Get away from me.”

Colt didn’t budge. “You have to tell the truth sometime, angel. Now would be a good time. Before your friends out there make their way inside.”

Ellie glared up at him. “Go. Away.”

“No, I’m not. I’m staying right here. And you are going to tell the truth. Lizzie deserves the truth. Just having you here puts her at risk, doesn’t it?” He barked.

Ellie winced at his words.

The bell over the door jingled. Ellie felt her heart grind to a halt, as her life force drained into her feet. This was how her life was going to end. In a bakery, with a handsome, arrogant man, calling her out on all of her lies. She waited for gunshots to ring out. When nothing happened, she stepped back and looked around Colt.

The chief of police, Frank Cooper, gave her a nod. “Morning.”

Colt kept at her. “Angel, that’s the man you need to tell the truth to. We can help you. You just have to tell us what in the hell is going on.”

Lizzie came around the counter and put her arm around Ellie. “You’re scaring her, Colt.”

“Anyone in the room want to clue me in?” Chief Cooper asked.

Colt and Ellie answered at the same time. “No. Yes.”

Chief Cooper’s eyebrows shot up.

With his eyes still latched onto hers, Colt jerked his chin to the street. “They’re here for her.”

“Is that true?” Chief Cooper took out his phone and snapped a few pictures of Pitbull and Spike.

Ellie leaned into Lizzie.

“It’s true.” Colt snapped. “Last night they came into The Barnacle. She ordered an Angel Shot with a lime.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s a drink code for someone needing immediate help. Request to call 9-1-1, which is exactly what we did. Before Zak walked into the bar, they took off, which leads me to believe they were listening to a police scanner. Now they’re here and she won’t tell us why. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Take a good, hard look at her. She’s scared to death, Chief.”

From the corner of her eye, Ellie watched Pitbull get off his bike. Terrified that she had put everyone around her in danger, she turned to Chief Cooper. “He’s right. They’re here for me.”

“Finally!” Colt threw his hands in the air. “The truth.”

“You know them?” Lizzie gasped. “Oh, honey. What did they do to you?” She hooked her arm through Ellie’s.

“Do you want to go with them?” Chief Cooper inquired, as he put his phone to his ear.

“Absolutely not!”

“Then we will help you. But to do that, we have to know everything.”

“Everything?” Ellie whispered.

“Everything.” Chief Cooper nodded.

“You can trust him, Ellie. I promise you.” Lizzie laid her head on Ellie’s shoulder.
