“He’ll hear what?” Colt swaggered over to the counter.

When the scent of Obsession hit her, Ellie’s knees buckled. He leaned on the counter and gave her a smile, brighter than the morning sun. “Girl talk, is all.”

“You here for coffee or to see Ellie?” Lizzie snapped open the register to add the tip money.

Ellie whirled around and gawked at her BFF.

“Both.”

“Alrighty then.” Lizzie grinned. “How do you take your coffee?”

“Cream and one sugar, please. Do you have any of those blueberry muffins left? Everyone at the gym was raving about them this morning.” Colt turned to Ellie. “How are you today, angel?”

“We’re out of muffins. And my name is not angel.”

Colt rose to his full height. “Okay. Message received. But, how are you, angel?”

Ellie swiped sweaty palms down the front of her apron. “Fine, thank you. I have work to do in the kitchen.” She turned around, praying that her legs held her up, because being around Colt Garrett did very strange things to her body.

“No, you don’t.” Lizzie handed Colt his coffee, then spun Ellie back around. “I’ll take care of the kitchen. You two chat.”

Before Ellie could argue or kick Lizzie in the shin again, the loud growl of motorcycle engines cut through the morning quiet.

“Hey, aren’t those the same guys from last night?” Lizzie walked over to the storefront window. “I thought the get-ups they were wearing were Halloween costumes. I guess I was wrong. They look even meaner in the daylight.”

Colt put down his coffee and walked around the counter, which had Ellie’s eyes shifting from the window and then back to Colt again. “What are you doing?” She hissed. “You shouldn’t be back here.” His sunny smile disappeared and was quickly replaced with the same savage look she’d seen last night that both terrified her and made her insides swoon.

“I want the truth.”

CHAPTER SEVEN

“Can you speak the truth?” Colt’s eyebrow arched.

Irritated that he was calling her out on her lies, Ellie decided the best course of action was to ignore him. Maybe he would just go away. She bent down, opened the display case and started to rearrange what was left.

Colt didn’t move an inch.

Ellie kept her focus on the cookies. But it didn’t stop the heat from his stare, burning her skin.

“I’m waiting.” He drawled.

Good God, the man was relentless! She took a rag out of her apron to buff spots off the glass in the case and nearly passed out. His thighs…holy moly…umm…his thighs were massive. Although she knew moving her eyes wasn’t smart, she let them shift up anyway. Wow. The package trapped behind his zipper was quite impressive. She squeezed her eyes shut. It had been months since she’d been touched by a man. Wait…years. It had been two years. Maybe that’s why every time she looked at him, she couldn’t stop thinking about sex. Then again, she’d seen lots of men in two years and no man had ever made her feel the way Colt Garrett did. Good thing she was leaving town. Because if she stayed, she wanted to know exactly what he was hiding under his clothes.

“You ready to talk, or what? I can stand here all day. I’ve got no place to be.”

“That’s sad.” She stood up. “Sorry you don’t have any friends.”

“Oh, I have friends. Lots of them. Don’t change the subject. Spit out the truth.”

“About what?” Ellie snapped.

“That.” He pointed over his shoulder.

“I don’t know anything about motorcycles.”

“Don’t be coy.” Colt leaned in close. “You still want to stick to your story about how you don’t know the bikers?”

“I don’t.” Lie five thousand and one rolled right off her tongue, with ease.
