Zak sat him in a chair and flew out the door.

When he was alone, all of the fury swirling inside of him turned to dread. And for the first time in his life, Colt Garrett wept.

About five minutes had passed when Colt’s phone did a shimmy across the table. He swallowed past the lump in his throat, then looked at the screen.

“I have your girl. Hold on, I’m bringing her to you.”

Colt’s heart did a somersault in his chest. He ran outside and right into the middle of the street. He had no idea from which way his brother would be coming. His eyes bounced back and forth.

“There!” Someone called out. “He’s right there!”

As the police car made its way down Main Street, so did Colt. Arms pumping, legs eating up the asphalt, he ran, until he saw his angel smiling at him from the windshield of Zak’s cruiser. The car stopped. Ellie ran into his arms. She was shaking so badly, he had to hold her up. But she was in once piece. And she was alive.

“I’m okay.” She whispered in his ear. “He didn’t hurt me. I’m okay.”

Colt squeezed her tight. He was never letting her go. Ever.

“Colt?” She wheezed. “I can’t breathe.”

Colt loosened his hold on her, pulling her away from his body, so he could check her from head to toe. “Do you need to go to the hospital?” He patted her arms, her face. “Are you sure you’re not hurt?”

“I’m good, honey. Your brother saved me.”

Colt lunged for his brother and squeezed the hell out of him, too. “I’ll never be able to repay you.”

“You just did.” Zak clapped him on the back. “Now back off, before you snap a rib.”

“Where is he?” Colt exhaled deep. “I want to see him.”

Zak’s mic squawked. “10-56. 10-56.”

“It’s over, brother. He just shot himself.”

“Bear’s dead?” Ellie started shaking again.

“He is. It’s over, Ellie. You have your life back.” Zak smiled.

“I thought I lost you.” Colt tucked Ellie under his arm.

“Sshhh. I’m right here. Be careful. Your soft side is showing.” When she smiled up at him, Colt didn’t care. He let his soft side show. His brother had just saved the woman that he thought he’d lost.

“Angel, brace yourself.” Colt stepped to the side, cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted at the top of his lungs. “I’m in love with Ellie McMahon!”

Sirens yelped, police clapped and his angel beamed at him.

Let the world see his soft side. He didn’t give a flying fuck.

Ellie was alive.

And that was all that mattered.

EPILOGUE

“Alright, please, I can’t take anymore.” Ellie laughed, as she scurried across the mattress.

“Is that so? I thought you never tired of me.” Colt flopped onto his back, a fine sheen of sweat misting across his beautiful skin.

“I don’t ever tire of you, the person. But your insatiable penis? Well, that’s another thing, entirely.”
