“Thank you for letting me have my secrets,”I murmured to her.“I know keeping them wasn’t the smartest decision, but it was important to me.”

“You couldn’t make your own choices for too much of your life, Nissa,”Bright replied, her voice smooth and sure.“I couldn’t make that one for you. It was for the sake of your pride, and I understood that, even if I didn’t always agree.”

“This is going to be terrible,” Eisley muttered, as she took all our original dresses from us and then tied strips of glittering fabric over our glowing handprints to hide them from the rest of the fae.

“This wasyouridea,” Laeli said, flashing Eisley a grin while she adjusted the metal outfit to cover her nipples better.

“Oh, I’m not going down for this. I will pin it on you, because Iknowyour king will protect you.” She pointed at Laeli, who was honestly the most plausible one of us to pin it on, if we weren’t blaming Eisley.

And Ravv would definitely defend her. He was the only king who had shown any sign of the possessiveness that was apparently supposed to be expected.

“Did you hear that?” Kaelle’s face jerked toward the caged area we would be fighting in.

“Did we hear what?” I asked her.

“I don’t know. It sounded… strange.” She frowned.

“I’m sure it’s just the crowd. They get really rowdy.”

A female fae rapped on the door and called out, “Ready?”

We all looked at each other.

“I guess,” Laeli called back.

Eisley grimaced deeply as we grabbed our swords. The fact that I was going to get some sort of revenge on Kierden during the fight made me forget the bad feeling I’d had about it.

The male fae at the door stepped in and took one look at us before his face went red. His eyes were glued to Laeli. The fae were all used to being nearly naked, but with their constant warring, they were all muscular and thin. And that was a direct contrast to the natural softness of humans.

Eisley cleared her throat, and he jerked his gaze to her.

Coughing a bit, he nodded respectfully at us all, and then stepped through the door that led out into the cage. A deafening roar went through the crowd, making my stomach roll.

He gave a quick introduction about the humans the kings had abducted for them, and then Eisley pushed us all out together.

We didn’t stumble, by some miracle.

We also didn’t jog or move with any other kind of enthusiasm. But the crowd didn’t care—their yelling and roaring and stomping had me fighting back a small smile.

When we reached the middle of the cage I turned, and my eyes met Kierden’s. He was up against the bars of the cage, his eyes burning as he gripped the metal.

Good.

He’d noticed.

Kaelle said something, but I didn’t hear it. Her wind was blowing harder than I’d ever felt it though, which didn’t seem like a great omen.

The fae man set us up across from each other, so we formed a triangle, and then he announced the start of the fight with a booming yell.

None of us moved as he crossed the cage, and then closed the door.

Only one of Kaelle’s hands was on her sword. The other one was pressed to her temple, and she grimaced like she was in pain.

The crowd’s roaring started to die down.

I looked at Laeli.

She shrugged, lifting her sword.
