But as I watched woman after woman approach him, I thought maybe I was wrong. Maybe the electricity I felt between us was just one sided. Just my hopeful imagination.

A lot of women probably felt that with Dylan. So many put their hands on his arms. He obviously knew those women and was comfortable with them.

Others, he seemed to be meeting for the first time, but he was warm and affectionate with them.

And they ate it up. Like I did.

Maybe he was kind and attentive to many of them. I wasn’t special.

I wondered if Dylan was actually enjoying himself tonight or just putting on a good front.

Lost in thought, I didn't hear Todd come up behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist, nuzzling my neck. I stiffened in surprise.

"There you are," he murmured against my skin. "What are you doing hiding back here all alone?"

I turned in his arms to face him. "Sorry, just needed a minute to breathe. It's pretty packed in there."

Todd studied my face, his brow furrowing. "Is everything okay?”

"Yeah, of course!" I said brightly. "Just overwhelmed by the crowd. I'm fine."

“Good,” he said, planting a kiss on my temple. “Let’s go sit at the table. I’ll be right there.”

Todd went to talk to Dylan, and in a few minutes they walked back toward the table where I sat with Grandpa and Dave.

Dylan stood a few feet away, glaring at Todd. Then Todd moved to sit again, but as he went down, he bypassed the chair and dropped to one knee, fumbling for something in his pocket.

My heart stopped.

Oh my God. No.

NO.

I stared down at him in shock, my mouth falling open. Marriagehad never even been discussed. Not even close.

I hoped he would see the unspoken answer on my face and stop before it was too late. That didn’t happen.

“Lana, I know this is fast. But I know a good thing when I see it, and I don’t see any point in putting this off.”

“Todd,” I said, shaking my head a little. “Honey—”

He opened a ring box in front of me. It was a round solitaire ringed by sapphires. It was lovely, but it was a huge chunk of a ring. It probably cost a few months of income, at least.

“I love you, Lana. Will you marry me?”

His smile was so sweet. I wanted to cry.

“Todd . . . it’s—it’s beautiful. But—”

“Here,” he said, plucking the ring out and taking my hand to slip it on my finger.

I pulled my hand away slowly to keep him from doing that.

“We’ve never talked about marriage. I wish we could have discussed this first, Todd.”

My face felt like it was going to start smoking any second. He hadn’t made a huge spectacle of us, but some people seated nearby were watching. And waiting for my answer. And both our grandfathers watched intently.

Neither had been smiling when he got down on his knee. They didn’t look happy about it. They looked . . . concerned.
