I checked my phone and sighed. "Nope. But that's Todd, always running late. He said he’d be here in fifteen minutes.”

“Well, I’m happy to play your fake boyfriend until your real one shows,” Dylan offered with a sexy smile.

Those words made my chest ache. How I wished the roles were reversed.

“Thanks,” I replied, laughing softly. “I would take you up on that offer, but I don’t want to keep you from your date.”

“She left when she realized it wasn’t going anywhere,” Dylan said.

Just then my phone buzzed on the bar counter.

It was Todd saying his work friends invited him out and I should join them at the bar they were headed to across town.

Was he serious?

Tonight was supposed to be a celebration for finally completing my last semester and getting my degree.

It was a big night for me. Todd had been so proud of me, excited to take me out to celebrate.

I was not in the mood to be out with his rowdy friends. Especially not after I’ve sat here for over thirty minutes, waiting for him to show.

My eyes stung, tears starting to form, but I blinked them away.

"I'm guessing Todd's not coming." Dylan said quietly.

I shook my head, swallowing down the knot in my throat. "No, he wants me to meet him at another bar.”

I looked down at my drink and tried to suppress the anger that was rising. I could feel Dylan’s eyes watching me.

He could probably see the emotions brewing inside me. He knew I had no intention of meeting Todd there.

I was about to tell Dylan I was heading home when he asked, “Do you like chocolate?”

I frowned in confusion and turned to him. He looked back at me with such an earnest expression, it threw me off even more.

“What?” I asked, blinking rapidly. “Is that a trick question?”

He laughed, shaking his head.

"Come on, I’m taking you out.” Dylan motioned to the bartender for my check.

He meant he felt sorry for the poor girl that got stood up by his brother, so he was throwing her a bone.

“What? Dylan, you don’t have to-," I started saying.

“Hey.” He softly tugged my wrist, stopping my sorry attempt at refusing. He seemed to sense what I was thinking. “I want to. So let me. And you look hot as hell. I’m not letting you waste that outfit."

He winked at me and I thought my face was going to go up in flames. Dylan dropped some cash for my drinks and held out his hand, palm facing up.

“Let’s go,” he said, waiting expectantly as I sat there debating whether I should head home or take Dylan’s hand and salvage the night.

The truth was, I didn’t want to go home. I had come out for a night out with Todd, but the thought of spending time with Dylan was more appealing by the second.

"Just two friends catching up," Dylan said, his hand still held out for me to take. "What do you say? I know a great place for dessert. Or drinks. Or whatever will make you happy tonight.”

How could I say no to that? I deserved a night out with someone that gave a shit about me for once.

“Okay,” I said as I slipped my hand into his, “Dylan?”
