“Tell him to fuck off,” I said angrily.

She looked shocked, and then almost like she was going to laugh from disbelief. By the time Austin was out of his car, she said, “Look, I get that you don’t like him, but don’t speak to me like that.”

She said the last half of the sentence much louder than the first.

I closed my eyes and sighed.

“Sorry,” I said, realizing I’d overstepped badly.

“Dylan, I’m only going to tell you this once.” Austin rushed up to me like he might be considering taking a swing. “Stay away from my girl.”

I straightened, coming face to face with him. Austin wasn’t a small guy so I didn’t tower over him like I did with most people. “Your girl? Is that so?”

“It is,” he said, trying to sound macho.

Lana got between us. “Both of you, knock it off.”

I almost laughed. “Stay away orwhat,Austin? What are you going to do about it?”

“Just stay away from my girl,” he said through clenched teeth.

Hearing that again,my girl, was too much.

“She was mine before she was yours,” I snapped.

Lana gasped and held her forehead. “This isn’t happening.”

Austin shook his head. “What did you say?”

“You heard me, you little—”

Austin lurched toward me, and I stood my ground. So he did nothing, like I expected.

“Iworkhere!” Lana shouted, gesturing toward the building. “People are looking out the window!”

She was right. We were making a scene and it wouldn’t be good for Lana.

It wasn’t the time or the place.

I had to back off, so I held up my hands.

"You're right. I'm sorry, Lana. Have a nice lunch together," I said, through gritted teeth.

"We will," Austin said smugly, placing a hand on Lana’s lower back and pushing her in the direction of his car. "Get in the car, babe."

Lana shifted away from his grasp, clearly uncomfortable with his claiming gesture.

I couldn't let it go.

"I’m sure Lana will get in the car when she’s ready," I snapped, glaring at Austin.

Austin's head whipped around, his eyes blazing.

"You better watch yourself, man," Austin spat out. “Get in the car, Lana,” he said, not taking his eyes off me.

I took a step closer. “Don’t talk to her like that,” I threatened.

He turned to Lana and grabbed her wrist. “Let’sgo. Now.”
