“Alisa, it’s been a while, how are you doing?”

“I’m good, Chief. Matt and I were in the neighborhood, and I wanted to stop in and see you. Do you have a few minutes?”

“For you, dear, always.”

She gives me a bright smile that reminds me of Samantha. Alisa takes a seat in the chair across from me.

“Chief, I’ll be blunt, I want Sam to come home.”

“Okay,” I say, wary about where this is going and wondering how much she knows about what happened between her sister and I.

“I know Sam wants to prove to herself and everyone else that she’s a great firefighter in her own right and she’s not just following in the shadows of our father. I get that, but South Carolina is too far from Maine, and I want my sister to come back knowing all her fears are not warranted. She can be at this firehouse, and still be her own person.”

“That is true. Is that really why she wouldn’t take a position here, because of the memory of your father?” I ask.

“That’s what she has always said.”

I nod, my mind spinning. “How do you propose to get her back here?” I ask Alisa.

I’m hoping if I tell her I’m pregnant, she will want to come home to be close to me and the baby.

“Are you pregnant?”

“Yes, we just found out this morning,” she says, with a big smile and tears in her eyes.

“Congratulations. I know your father would be so happy,” I tell her.

“Thanks, but I can’t do this without my sister.”

“What can I do?”

“Offer her a position. Find out what her dream job is and make it happen, I don’t care, just help me get and keep my sister here,” Alisa almost pleads with me.

“You know your sister is very stubborn, and when she makes up her mind, there’s not much changing it.”

“That’s true, she does have those dominant Taurus traits in her, dad always said so.”

“Tell you what, give me her number, and I will see what I can do to help. When do you plan to tell her your news?”

“Hopefully tonight. I’m hoping once I tell her, she will make plans to come up here, then we need to convince her to stay,” she says, jotting down Samantha’s number.

“Okay. I’ll do some homework into what positions we have available here, and I’ll allow you to share your news, then we can go from there, how’s that?”

“Sounds good, Chief, thank you so much for this.”

I chuckle and tell her, “You’re welcome.”

She walks out of my office, and I sit back down, trying to decide the best approach to getting Samantha back into my arms now that I have allowed myself to mentally claim her.

Later that night at home, I try to call her with the number that Alisa gave me. I’m not sure what I’m going to say, especially if Alisa hasn’t told her big news, but I only get her voicemail. If she’s on shift, she could be at a fire, but if she’s off, there is a good chance she could be out with someone tonight.

What happens if I have to compete with someone younger than me and closer to her age? It doesn’t matter. I will do whatever it takes to get her back. Samantha Holland is mine. I need to figure out how I’m going to convince her that I’m the only one for her, and that I made a mistake by letting her go, instead of saying kissing her was a mistake. The truth is kissing her opened my heart to what could be.

I lie in bed awake all night with thoughts of Samantha on my mind, trying to come up with ideas that will get me closer to her.

By the time morning comes, I’m no closer to having any answers than I was when I made the decision to get her back in my life, and no sleep. The one thing I am sure of is that if I want her back, I’m going to have to go to South Carolina and prove to her that we belong together.

I start making plans, with the first stop being to visit the firehouse and making sure they are treating her right. After that, I’m going to have to play things by ear, Samantha isn’t like other women. She’s strong willed, stubborn, and not one to easily forget, but after one kiss, I also know she’s very sensual and sexual. I can’t wait to explore that side of her more.
