CHAPTER FOUR

SAMANTHA

It’s been over a month since Alisa called and told me her big news. I’m going to be an aunt, and she wants me to come home and help her. I know nothing about babies. How much help could I really be to her?

I walk straight to my bathroom and turn the water on to hot, allowing the bathroom to steam up as I strip my clothes off and step in under the hot spray. I sigh in contentment as the water hits my muscles, releasing all the aches and stress of the night. I can feel myself relaxing and begin washing up before I fall asleep standing up in the shower. I turn off the water, grabbing the towel to dry off, then landing in my bed, before completely passing out for the day.

I wake to the sound of my doorbell ringing, and mutter, “Go away,” as I snuggle deeper into blankets, trying to ignore the incessant ringing of the doorbell, but it just won’t stop.

I get up, frustrated and pissed at being woken up. I grab my robe, pulling it on and around me, then pad my feet to the door, I open it ready to yell at the asshole who would not go away, when I’m stopped short.

“Connor, I mean, Chief Yates, what are you doing here?” I ask, shocked and breathless to find the man I was just dreaming about standing at my front door.

“Did I wake you?”

“YES, you did,” I screech at him, trying to muster up some anger in my voice.

“I apologize for that, but I need to talk to you.”

“Did something happen to Alisa? To the baby?” I ask, worried now.

“No, nothing like that.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Like I said, I need to talk to you,” his voice sounds husky, and his eyes dilate.

I look down and see my robe isn’t closed all the way, and the top of my breasts are showing. “Fine, let me just put some clothes on.” I huff in an exasperated voice.

He walks into my house, heading straight toward the kitchen, while I go back to my bedroom. I throw on a pair of leggings and a t-shirt.

I walk into the bathroom and quickly brush my teeth, then brush through my hair before putting it up in a messy bun at the top of my head.

My heart is pounding with a combination of fear and excitement, wondering why Connor has come to South Carolina. I make my way to the kitchen, trying to control my internal emotions so they don’t show on my face. I have always been told my facial expressions tell the world exactly what I am thinking.

I blow out a breath and walk into the kitchen where Conner is standing with a cup of coffee. He passes me a fresh poured cup, and I add sugar and creamer to my taste, then take a sip of the sweet hot nectar. I close my eyes, savoring the taste on my tongue, before remembering I have a guest in my kitchen.

I take my cup over to the dining room table and take a seat. Connor follows me and sits in a chair next to me.

“What do you want to talk about, Chief?” I ask, trying to maintain some form of professionalism.

“I would like for you to transfer to my firehouse.”

“Why?”

“There are many reasons, and one of them is you are a hell of a firefighter,” he states simply.

“You have a whole crew of firefighters that are no different than me, and some may even be better than me,” I tell him honestly.

“That is true, but Largo is your home, and you deserve to be home.”

“I’ll need more than that. I like it here; the winters aren’t brutal, and the crew I work with are great,” I tell him, sipping on my coffee.

“Alisa would love to have you home, especially since she is now expecting.”

“Is she the reason why you are offering me a position? I already told her I can always come home to visit.”

“But is that enough? Will you be able to form a bond with the baby with just visits?” he asks, and I noticed he didn’t answer my question.
