The next morning, they walked into the kitchen, holding hands, and hopeful that today would be a better day.

Kenzie was planning to try and convince Cassie to give them the day off. After yesterday, she needed a rest day. Plus, it was raining. She was pretty sure no one else would be training today unless they did it inside.

Turns out she didn’t even have to track her down. Everyone was already gathered in the kitchen, waiting patiently as Marilyn and Antonio put out a large breakfast spread. She was practically drooling from the delicious smells wafting around the room.

“Oh good, you’re up! Just in time too.” Marilyn waved them toward the table, “Take a seat with the others. We’re almost done here, then you kids can dig in.”

She smiled, “Thanks guys. You’re the best.”

Antonio chuckled and winked, “Don’t we know it. I’ll save you extra bacon.”

Marilyn snapped a dish towel at him, “Quit flirting you old dog. There’s plenty of everything to go around.”

Kenzie shook her head with a smile as she sat at the table next to her brother. She was happy to see everyone was here this morning. They hadn’t all been together since their drunken hair dye party.

Which reminded her, she needed to ask Raven to change her hair back. She felt silly when she shifted.

Marshall nudged her with his shoulder, “How you are feeling today?”

“Great actually. I love werewolf healing powers. You?”

“Good as new. Raven has decided to give us the day off though, due to our trauma. And Cassie has agreed as well. So, take the day to relax and do something fun.” He looked around her so he could see Aiden, “Also, William is delayed and won’t be able to be here until this evening.”

Raven sighed, “Do they really need to come back?”

Marshall nodded, “Yes. Let’s just say, we had a minor break in the case.”

Darren leaned closer, expecting Marshall to explain. When he didn’t, Darren asked, “What break?”

Marshall shook his head, “I don’t want to discuss it just yet, in case we are wrong. It’s only William and Corine coming tonight. Once I know more, I will tell you everything.”

For a second Darren looked like he might not let it go, but then Brianna nudged him. He sighed, then nodded at Marshall, “Fine.”

Aiden turned to Raven, “Speaking of breaks. I had an idea, a just in case kind of thing. Is there any way to make a charm for Marshall and Kenzie to protect them from dark magic?”

Raven looked thoughtful for a moment, “Do you mean like the magic that was on the tranquilizer dart?”

He nodded, “Yes, and more. Maybe a tracking spell too. Andre has tried to take them too many times now. And he might try again. I’m not saying he will succeed of course, but whatever Marshall was shot with, could have killed him. And I think they need something that can help just as a precaution.”

Marshall growled, “I don’t need a damn charm. I am not a helpless child.”

Sorcha was sitting on Marshall’s other side, and she gently touched his wrist, “No one is saying you’re helpless. But an extra layer of protection would be helpful. Especially when there are enemies all over the place and we don’t know who they all are. We are working in the dark here and it will make us all feel better if you have extra protection.”

Marshall placed his hand over top of hers, “Okay.” He looked at Raven, “What kind of charm would it be?”

Raven drummed her fingers on the table, “Well, for that sort of thing, I would say there are two options. It would need to be something they can’t find or something they can’t see. I can make one that would be embedded under the skin, like an implant. Though, they can be a little irritating. Or I can make you something like a bracelet or ring and then cloak it so anyone intending you harm can’t see or touch it.”

Kenzie scooted forward so she could see Raven at the end of the table, “How would you make a bracelet that they couldn’t see or touch? What if they grab our wrist while we’re wearing it?”

“Their hand would go through it, as if it’s not there at all. They would never know.” Raven waved her right hand over her left and a silver ring appeared on her middle finger. “This is my own personal ring of protection. I keep it cloaked from everyone, mostly out of habit. I’ve had it since I was twenty.”

She waved her hand again and the ring disappeared. Then she held out her hand for Darren, who was next to her, to shake.

His face transformed into surprised wonder, “I can’t feel it at all. That’s so cool!”

Raven smiled, “Thanks. Just a little trick I picked up from a friend, but it has been surprisingly helpful.”

Kenzie thought for a moment before making her decision, “I think, I would prefer a bracelet or ring. I don’t really want anything embedded into my skin. That just sounds painful.”
