She covered her mouth with the hand that was holding the remnants of her biscuit, “I could eat a whole cow I’m so hungry. I feel like I haven’t eaten in days.”

“It’s probably because you used so much magic earlier. It sapped your energy. There’s always a price for magic.” That had him thinking. They really needed to start working to train her and Marshall. He hasn’t shown any kind of magic use yet, but Aiden figured it was just a matter of time if Kenzie was able to use it now.

“Hm.. probably.” Kenzie spoke around a mouthful of biscuit, then continued to fill her plate with the next selections.

By the time they were done, Aiden had a plate in each hand, and both were as full as they could get. They walked over to the table where Marshall and Christopher were, and he put the plates down. As he started to sit, there was a loud squeal behind him, and he turned just in time to catch the woman flying at him.

As he hugged his sister, he heard a snort from beside him. Turning, with her still in his arms he saw Kenzie roll her eyes and scooch over on the bench seat to be closer to her brother. Aiden was not making a very good impression on her so far.

Figuring he should explain, he put his sister back on her feet, “Kenzie, I would like to introduce you to my twin sister Cassie. Cassie, this is Mackenzie. The newest member of our pack and Marshalls long lost sister.”

Well, Kenzie stopped eating at least. Then she wiped her hands off on a napkin and stood up and reached her hand out for a shake. Cassie didn’t take her hand, instead she threw herself into Kenzie’s arms as she had just done to Aiden, almost knocking them both to the ground. He quickly grabbed them to keep them from toppling over.

Kenzie didn’t seem like she knew what to do, but slowly she wrapped her arms around his sister. She had the most awkward and unsure look on her face he’d ever seen.

Then Cassie started rambling, while still holding onto her, “Oh my gosh I’m so happy to meet you, Mackenzie! Finally! Where have you been? You know we always knew you’d show up one day. When we were kids, Marshall used to gush about how his sister was off having an adventure. We used to tease him for it, but I guess you really were in a way.”

Cassie finally took a breath and pulled back. Kenzie was a bit flushed, “Um… Hi. Nice to meet you. I live in North Carolina. I had a few adventures when I started working as a photographer but nothing major, and I think I always knew I would come here someday too. And call me Kenzie.”

Then she smiled at his sister, and he was a goner. Cassie had so much energy and she was so nosey that some people weren’t her biggest fan, even though she was the sweetest person he knew. Seeing Kenzie accept her like that, made his heart just about burst.

Cassie grinned at Kenzie, “We’re going to be friends Kenzie. I’m going to go get food, be right back!”

Cassie ran off like the whirlwind that she was, leaving a stunned Kenzie behind.

Looking at him, she said, “So, that’s your sister.”

He motioned for her to sit back down, then sat on the bench beside her, “Yes, one of them. She’s a ball of energy but one of the best people you’ll ever meet.”

Kenzie looked at him for a moment, “It must run in the family.”

As she turned back to her plate, Aiden swore he felt his heart skip a beat. He shook it off and started eating as he tuned into the conversation Marshall and Chris were having.

They were talking about the patrols again, just going over a few things to make sure there were no gaps in security. Aiden already knew their plans, so tuned back out.

Looking around he noticed William walking over to their table, without Corine. He’d never seen them apart before, so out of curiosity he searched the crowd for her. When he located her, she was sitting with the last two people he would expect.

Annabelle and Genevieve.

A bit puzzled, he asked Marshall. “Why is Corine with the nightmare twins?”

Marshall coughed mid-sentence, cutting himself off from whatever he was discussing with Chris.

Just then, William reached their table and sat down next to Chris who nodded like it was an everyday thing for a council member to eat dinner with them. Though, since they were longtime friends, maybe it wasn’t too farfetched. It was just odd for Aiden. He rarely had to deal with the council himself unless there was a meeting, and never socially.

Marshall turned to him, “Corine and the twins are related somehow. Second cousins or something like that. They always spend time together when she is here.”

“Huh. Weird. Though, their personalities are very similar so I guess I can see it.”Marshall snorted then turned back to his food.

Aiden knew it wouldn’t be long before someone came to interrupt him. He was trying to eat quickly before that happened.

As he started eating, he noticed how quiet their table was. Apparently, everyone had the same thoughts. Or they were all ridiculously hungry because they’d forgotten to eat today. Aiden looked over at Kenzie to see she had stopped eating and was looking at something.

He followed her gaze to see it was Sorcha. She was sitting by herself at the end of one of the tables. She was new and Aiden was pretty sure she hadn’t had time to make any friends yet. Kenzie started to get up from her seat like she was going to go to her, but then Cassie approached Sorcha. Aiden watched her, noting that she moved slowly and walked in her line of sight.

Cassie had aways been good with people, but it was like she knew how to not spook Sorcha. Like she had dealt with this kind of thing before. It made him wonder where she learned that.

Kenzie lowered herself back down, also watching them. He put his hand over hers and said quietly, “Cass will invite her to sit with us. She’s going to try to bring her into the fold. She’s good with people so it may help if Sorcha will accept it.”
