They practiced for hours with no luck. She could feel the magic in her chest like a warm glow, but she couldn’t seem to connect with it.

Marshall wasn’t having any better luck and they were both getting frustrated. Kenzie was also starving, most likely due to her little bit of magic use, or the late hour, maybe both. The sun was high, meaning they’d been out here longer than she’d thought. The day was half over already.

Even Raven seemed a little annoyed that they hadn’t made any progress. Finally, she said enough.

“Okay, we are done with the elements today. We’ll have to try it from a different angle tomorrow. Real quick, I want to see what you can do with your telepathy and empathy. Marshall, you’re first. Tell me what I’m thinking.”

Marshall cleared his throat nervously, then stepped a little closer to her and closed his eyes. A look of concentration came over his face, “You’re concerned that we couldn’t conjure any elemental magic but you’re proud of our efforts. You’re curious what we will ultimately be able to do. You think I have a nice butt and it’s too bad I’m already taken, though you’ve been reading a steamy romance novel and wish you had some…”

“Okay! That’s enough. Great, so at least you can control that. Go ahead and put your wall back up.” Raven was blushing a little.

Kenzie watched as Marshall’s brow furrowed in concentration, while he put the wall back up in his mind.

Then Raven turned to her, “You’re turn. Read my aura and my emotions, tell me what I’m feeling.”

She closed her eyes for a second so she could imagine the brick wall she’d built in her mind, then imagined a door that she could open. Once she had the image in her mind, she opened her eyes as she opened the door.

Raven’s aura was unlike any she had seen so far. It was a swirl of colors. Blues, greens, purples and a shimmering iridescent color. It was so unique and looked a lot like the color of her eyes. Once she locked onto Raven’s aura, she opened herself to feel her emotions.

“You are happy, excited, a little worried, and frustrated with yourself.” Kenzie concentrated to close the door again, then asked, “Why are you frustrated with yourself?”

Raven shrugged, “I wasn’t able to help you use your powers today. I feel like I failed. But I think we are going to try a different approach tomorrow. I have a feeling your powers won’t work the same as a witch. What about my aura?”

“Your aura is awesome! It’s blue, green and purple swirling together and it’s kind of sparkly, like your eyes. But I don’t know what it means. I don’t understand any of the colors I see yet.”

Raven nodded, “That’s normal. It’s something you will have to learn. My aura is a typical witch aura. Whenever you see one like it, you’ll know they are a witch. Our auras are basically a representation of our magic. I am strongest in water, earth and spirit. Which is blue, green, and purple, and the stars just indicate magic. Our auras do not show our mood or emotions. Have you seen Marshall’s yet?”

Kenzie shook her head, “No. When it started up there were too many people around and everything just blurred together so I couldn’t tell them apart. Then I built my little wall, and I’ve kept it up since.”

“Alright, well let’s give it a try. I’m curious if it’ll look like a witch’s or a werewolf’s.” Raven indicated to Marshall, who stepped a little closer to Kenzie.

She imagined opening the door again and noticed that it was getting a little easier to do each time.

Once it was opened, she looked at Marshall and gasped.

“Oh my gosh, it’s beautiful! It looks like fire, red and gold swirling together and there is a white ring around it.” That wasn’t what had surprised her though, “It is dancing with mine.”

She did her best to look at herself, though it was a bit difficult. She could only see part of her aura. But there was a tendril of blue ringed in white dancing with Marshalls.

Marshall looked down at his arms like he was trying to see what she saw. It was so cool. She wished she could show him. But maybe she could.

“Marshall, look into my thoughts. I want to show you what it looks like.”

He gave her an unsure look, “I don’t want to invade your privacy.”

She smiled at him. That was such a sweet thing to say, “I think I can block you from seeing anything else. But I want you to be able to see what I can. Go ahead, I don’t mind.”

Raven scoffed, “You didn’t have a problem looking into my head.”

Marshall rolled his eyes at Raven, then focused on Kenzie. He studied her face for a second, then closed his eyes. She watched his face change from concentration to excitement.

She was doing her best to project the image that she was seeing, hoping it would come through for him.

His face lit up with a smile and he opened his eyes. He pulled her into a big hug, nearly picking her up. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, enjoying the shared experience.

She was really getting used to all the touching, she was even starting to enjoy it. She didn’t know if it was because she missed human contact, or maybe just being around people like her.

She felt like she really belonged for the first time.
